VHS Spring Sports Update
Softball - The  Lady  Loggers  had  a 
break  in  their  schedule  with  no  league 
games  between  April  11  and  April  29.  
Two  non-league  games  were  cancelled 
because of weather.  
 
Coach Mike Fetch has his young 
team playing good ball and challenging 
for the league lead.  The Lady Loggers 
are  in  second  place  with  a  9-2  record.  
They are 5-2 in District 1  play. 
 
On  April  29  Vernonia  returned 
to action,dropping the first game 13-0 in 
a  crucial  three  game  series  against  first 
place Knappa. 
 
Vernonia  was  scheduled  to 
wrap  up  the  Knappa  series  with  a 
double  header  on  Friday  May  2.    The 
Lady  Loggers  conclude  their  District 
regular  season  with  home  games  on 
Tuesday,  May  6  against  Neah-Kah-Nie 
and  Monday,  May  12  against  Portland 
Christian.

went 1-2 in their series against Portland 
Lutheran,  losing  two  close  games  6-5 
and 7-6 and defeating  them 11-4.  The 
Loggers went 2-1 in their match-p with 
Faith Bible with two shutout wins 13-0 
and  3-0;  they  also  lost  to  Faith  Bible 
16-6.    The  Loggers  kicked  off  a  three 
game  series  with  first  place  Knappa 
on  Tuesday  April  29  with  a  10-0  loss.  
Knappa is currently ranked number one 
in the state in 2A baseball.   
 
The  Loggers  have  received 
good  starting  pitching  from  senior 
Tim  Jennings  who  got  the  win  against 
Portland  Lutheran.    Jennings  went  the 
distance,  pitching  7  innings,  scattering 
10  hits  while  giving  up  only  2  earned 
runs.   Jennings also pitched a  three-hit, 
complete  game  shutout  in  the  Loggers 
3-0 win against Faith Bible.  Freshman 
Bailey  Morrison  turned  in  a  dominant 
performance  on  the  mound  for  the 
Baseball - Coach  Joe  Walters  and  the  Loggers  against  Faith  Bible,  pitching  a

of Directors of Animal Aid, Inc.
Loggers 13-0 win.
 
At  the  plate  the  Loggers  have 
been  hitting  the  ball  well.    In  the  13-0 
win against Faith Bible, Bo Clark went 
2 for 4 with 3 RBI’s and scored 2 runs.  
Morrison  helped  his  own  cause  in  that 
game  going 2 for 3 with an RBI.  Tim 
Jennings  and  Ronnie  Maldonado  both  
went 1 for 2 with 2 walks and both scored 
3 runs.  In the 3-0 win over Faith Bible 
Brett  Elliot  went  2  for  3  with  an  RBI; 
John Dass also had a hit and an RBI. 
 
In the 11-4  win against Portland 
Lutheran    Elliot  again  swung  a  big  bat 
going  2  for  5  with  4  RBI’s  and  2  runs 
scored.    Jennings  went  3  for  4  with  a 
double,  1  RBI  and  2  runs.  Maldonado 
went  2  for  4  with  a  double  an  RBI 
and  a  run.  Morrison  was  2  for  5  with 
a  double.    Jarred Whitton  went  2  for  4 
with a double.  In the 7-6 loss to Portland 
Lutheran,  Morrison  was  2  for  4  with  a 
double and 2 RBI’s.  Jennings was 2 for 
3 with a walk. 
 
The  Loggers  continue  their 
series  against  Knappa  with  a  double 
header at home on Friday May 2.  they 
conclude  their  league  schedule  with 
home games  on Tuesday, May 6 against 
Neah-Kah-Nie  and  Monday,  May  12 
against Portland Christian.
 
On  May  22th,  at  7:00  PM, 
Vernonia  Hands-On  Art  Center,  the 
local  non-profit  arts  and  heritage 
support  group,  presents  the  fifth  annual 
Jr.  Salmon  Auction  at  Vernonia’s  new 
school on Missouri Avenue.
salmon  will  be  auctioned  off  with  a 
minimum starting bid of  $10.00. Profits 
go  to  support  Vernonia  School  Arts, 
Scholarship,  and  Hands-On  Art 
programs.
 
Doors  open  at  6:30.  Enjoy  live 
 
A  fundraiser  for  the  Vernonia 
Schools  arts  programs,  the  auction 
features the amazing salmon creations of 
Vernonia  art  students.  The  students  are 
supplied  with  blank  pressboard  salmon 
on  which  to  craft  their  own  unique 
visions.  In  addition  to  salmon,  students 
have  worked  their  magic  on  small 
furniture items that will also be included 
in the auction.
  
Beginning  at  7:00  PM  the 
music  performed  by  students  under  the 
direction  of  Andy  Morrow,  visit  the 
Band Boosters for a bite to eat, and chat 
up  Vernonia’s  talented  young  artists 
while  you  browse  their  creations.  Be 
sure to sign up at the bidder’s table and 
be ready to go at 7:00!

Track and Field - The  Loggers  have 
competed  at    Portland  Christian,  The 
Banks  Invitational  (20  schools),  Neah-
Kah-Nie  and  The  Portland  Christian 
Invitational  (28  schools).  The  team  is 
preparing  for  the  District  Meet  in  three 
weeks  and  is  focused  on  qualifying  as 
many athletes as possible for state.
 
“We  know  what  our  strengths 
are  and  will  try  to  improve  on  them  in 
the  next  2  meets  before  district,”  says 
head coach Byron Brown.  Brown says 
the  team  is  strongest    in  the  longer 
sprints and middle-distance races.  Jacob 
Medearis,  Daniel  Rice,  Drew  Cheney 
and  Devon  Shay  have  good  ability  in 
everything  from  the  4x100  and  4x400 
relays to the 200, 400 and 800.  Meghan
