A funeral service was held on Saturday, March 29, 2014 at 1:15 PM, followed by a Celebration of Life, both at the Sons of Norway Lodge in Gearhart, OR. Until we meet again... Cletus Richard “Dick” May Cletus Richard “Dick” May, died at home on March 22, 2014 in Salem, OR, losing a two and a half year battle with acute myeloid leukemia. He was born in Yakima, WA on Sept. 23, 1930 to Willis Richard May Jr. and Dessie Frances Vinson. He was the middle child of seven and always claimed that middle children were the best adjusted. Dick graduated from Vernonia High School, Class of 1950, and joined the Navy in 1951 during the Korean Conflict. He spent most of his service years aboard the USS Lewis Hancock serving as Quartermaster. At one point his ship left Korea and embarked on a world Goodwill tour visiting 27 countries. After spending four years, 1950 to 1954, in the service, he came home and went back to work at the Oregon- American Lumber Mill in Vernonia, OR. In 1956 he started school at Portland State College and two years continued from page 16 later transferred to the University of Oregon. Dick graduated in 1959 with a Bachelor’s degree in history and political science, and in 1960 with a Master’s degree in political science, history and education. He married Marylyn Sue Good in 1957 in Vernonia. Their son, Michael, was born in 1962 in Portland. Dick went to work in 1960 as a Land Law Examiner for the Bureau of Land Management in Portland, OR. In 1964 he went to Vale, OR as a Realty Specialist in the Lands Program. Then in 1966 it was on to the Prineville District as the Lead Realty Specialist. Seven years later he accepted the job as the head of BLM’s Lands program in New Mexico. In 1975 he went to Washington DC as part of the Evaluation staff for the BLM Lands program. His final move with BLM was in 1977 when the family moved to Carmichael, CA. There he was in charge of the California Lands Program, working out of the Sacramento office. He retired from BLM n 1982. After retirement he worked with a consulting firm offering Government Liaison Services, and he also sold real estate for a time. In 1986, he and Marylyn decided on a lifestyle change and moved to the Big Island of Hawaii for a year. In 1987 they came back to the mainland and bought a small acreage in Independence, Oregon. Then in 1995 they had a house built in Dallas, Oregon and lived there until 2012 when Dick’s health made a move to Hidden Lakes Retirement Community in Salem necessary. Once his health improved they bought a home in south Salem that they have enjoyed immensely for the past year. Dick loved traveling with trips to Ireland, Spain, New Mexico, Canada, and around the United States. He especially loved those winters RVing in Arizona and California. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Marylyn, of Salem; his son, Michael of El Dorado Hills, CA, his brother, Jack (Dolores) May, of Portland, his sister, Darlene, (Ben) Westbrook, of Dallas, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters and one brother. At his request there will be no service. A private interment will be at a Willamette National Cemetery. Online condolences may be left at www.dallastribute.com april3 2014 Charles “Buster” Franck March 21, 2014 marked the end of a full life for Charles “Buster” Franck, 91, a resident of Forest Grove, Oregon. Charles was born on September 3, 1922 in Cornelius, Oregon, son of the late John Martin and Bessie M. (Rutledge) Franck. He was raised and received his education in the Forest Grove community. Following high school, he worked in the shipyards for a few years before being drafted into the United States Army. He was united in marriage to Ilene Savage on March 30, 1948 in Vancouver, Washington. Later this month they would have celebrated their 66th Wedding Anniversary. Following their marriage they made their home in Gaston, Oregon until 1956 when they 17 moved to Forest Grove, where they have resided since. Charles began working at the Forest Grove Creamery in 1947, where he made butter. He later retired after forty years of employment. Among his special interests, Charles loved woodworking, gardening and trips to the beach. He is preceded in death by his parents, John and Bessie Franck; two sisters, Corinne Vanderzanden and Betty Vuylsteke, and two brothers Lawrence Franck and Jackie Franck. Survivors include his wife, Ilene Franck, of their family home in Forest Grove; his five children, Carole Shaw, of Depoe Bay, Oregon, Lucy Warren, of Camas, Washington, David Franck, of Sheridan, Oregon, Lyle Franck, and Brian Franck, both of Vernonia, Oregon. Also surviving are his seven grandchildren, Gary, Irene, D.J., Natalie, Jonathan, Chris, and Stacy, along with several great-grandchildren. A gathering for friends and family will be held Sunday, April 6, 2014 from 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM at the family home in Forest Grove.
