Extra! Extra! Read All About It!!
By Susan Ely
The holiday season was a busy
time for the Vernonia Community PTA.
Our fall fundraiser order was submitted
in November and deliveries arrived just
before kids went home on Christmas
Break. Again, community support was
great and kids really gave it their all to
raise money for playground equipment.
Candy grams were a huge
success and a ton of fun for the kids once
again, raising $133.95 and also being
tied in to the behavior rewards program
as an added bonus.
The Teacher Giving Tree was
once again a wonderful way for people
to show their appreciation to teachers
in our school by gifting them a small
value classroom item that they need to
help them teach. Most of the teacher’s
gift items were given by parents and,
in addition to those, VCPTA was able
to fill the gift requests for those that
were not. The PTA worked very hard to
coordinate, shop, wrap and then deliver
gifts to teachers with a jolly “Ho, ho,
ho!” on the final day of school.

VHS Sports continued from page 12 Schools Update: Cold Season
who has wrestled well at
times and needs to develop
more mental endurance.
Zane Kovelda is
strong and tough at 160 and
has all the tools to be a great
wrestler. “He’s the real deal,”
says Barnes. “He has the
natural ability and the desire.”
Barnes says he continues to
work on technique, especially
takedowns, with Kovelda.
Kovelda has won numerous
big matches this season and
should be a favorite at the
District Tournament with
a chance to go really far at
State.
Bridger
Steward
at 170 pounds is a senior
leader on the team who
has the physical ability and
technique to do well and beat
anybody. “When he is on, he
is unbeatable,” says Barnes.
Steward should be a threat
at the District Tournament
this year. Samuel Huot is an
exchange student and first
year wrestler who has had
great success in the somewhat
soft 182 pound weight class.
An inexperienced wrestler,
he should be one of the top
seeds in the District with a
great chance to get to State.
Kane Losli is a
freshman who severely
injured his knee early in
the season but has stayed
on his weight loss plan and
continued to practice and
workout with the team.
“He is just awesome,”
says Barnes. “He’s been
really committed.” Losli
has travelled to away
tournaments and been taking
photos for the team. Barnes
also mentioned the great
work of his two statisticians,
Lilly Lindsley and Jessika
Goodman. “They’re doing a
really good job.”
