On the Shelves: What’s Happening at the Vernonia Library

Columbia County Reads 2014
January, February, and March
will once again feature reading and events
as part of “Columbia County Reads.”
What is this you ask? In an attempt to
provoke thought and discussion by all
residents in Columbia County the local
libraries unite to choose a common
theme and from there books to be read,
discussed, and events planned. This
year’s theme is ‘Survival, Self-Reliance,
and Sustainability’. Featured books for
Columbia County Reads 2014 are:
Adult Selections -
Wild
by Cheryl Strayed

going to take a hike, it’s probably the
place to go. And Bill Bryson is surely the
most entertaining guide you’ll find. He
introduces us to the history and ecology
of the trail and to some of the other hardy
(or just foolhardy) folks he meets along
the way – and a couple of bears. Already
a classic A Walk in the Woods will make
you long for the great outdoors (or at least
a comfortable chair to sit and read in).

The classes will cover veg-
etable and fruit gardening, soils and
fertilizers, insect and disease identifi-
cation and management, weed identi-
fication and management, and lots of
other topics of interest to gardeners.
Payback projects (an obliga-
tion for all Master Gardeners™) will
be focused in the Vernonia area and
nearby communities. If you are inter-
ested in the Vernonia OSU Master
Gardener program, please call the

more information and to get on the
mailing/email list.

After twenty-one years of hav-
ing the Master Gardener classes in St.
Helens, Vernonia hosted the class in
2010. It was a wonderful class. After
discussion with a number of people, it
was decided to come back to Verno-
nia for the 2014 class. The classes will
be held in Vernonia each Thursday
from about 9:30 am – 3 p.m. starting
March 6th. 2014; there will be about
10 class days on successive weeks.
Classes will start in March to avoid
the worst weather and will go through
early May. Cost of the class series will
still be $75. Gardeners from all parts
of the county are welcome.
