Things To Ponder
By Grant Williams

While visiting my parents in Southern
California we attended a Christmas Eve
program in a beautiful, secluded place called,
“Silverado Canyon.” The pastor made a
bold statement in his sermon that took me by
surprise. This is not a word for word quote,
but, he said something along these lines: There
are people sitting on a bar stool somewhere
right now who are just as likely to be in heaven
as the people who sit in church every Sunday
because the person on the bar stool is probably
more conscious of the fact that they are a sinner
who needs help.

The person who is in church every time
the doors are open can become comfortable with
themselves, not remembering that Jesus said:
He came to save sinners, not the righteous. The
righteous He was referring to, of course, were
the people who saw themselves as being
in favor with God because of their good
works and piety. The person on the bar
stool may truly need help, but being
there doesn’t make him automatically
an enemy of God. The blind spot in
many religious peoples lives is the fact
that everyone needs the grace and mercy
of a loving and forgiving God. The
Bible tells us that we are all sinners and
fall short of His glory. Read Romans
3:23 and I John 1:5-10.

As we go into the New Year,
let’s make a conscious decision to live
for today, build for the future, and leave
the past in God’s loving care. Let’s
deliberately forgive and forget about
the hurts and the failures of the past and
work toward a harmonious future with
Christ at the center of our activities.
We would also be wise to remember
the parable of the wheat and the tares
january2
in Matthew 13:24-43. It will be to everyone’s
benefit if we leave the judging to God and
pick up our own cross and follow Jesus. It is
very easy to see other peoples faults and miss
or ignore our own. Let’s make a real effort in
2014 to get ourselves ready to meet our Maker.
Every day we are alive the “Day of the Lord”
draws nearer!

Sure hope you enjoyed the holidays.
It’s time to enter the New Year with vigor and
a renewed sense of urgency regarding God’s
purpose for the churches in Vernonia. God has
placed Christians in our community with His
message of life and hope. If you don’t currently
have a place of worship you call home The Open
Door Gathering Place meets on Wednesday at
7:00 PM at the Vernonia Grange. Everyone is
welcome to come and check out our ministry.
Happy New Year and may God bless you.
