Sustainability Day
Students from all the Vernonia Schools took part in
Sustainability Day in November. Students worked around
the school campus, removing invasive species. High School
students, under the direction of members of the Forestry
Class worked at the “Old Mill Marsh” wetland area, planting
native plants and removing invasive species. The District has
scheduled three Sustainability Days this year as part of the
Natural Resources curriculum the school is emphasizing.

Upcoming VCPTA events: The teacher Giving Tree
will be put up in the entry to the Vernonia Schools
on December 9th. It will be hung with ornaments
with teacher’s Christmas wishes printed on them in
the hopes that parents and community members can
show their appreciation by donating a small gift to
their classroom. Wrapped gifts for teachers should be
returned with their ornaments to the school no later than
December 20th, for delivery to teachers on December
21st. There will also be ornaments hung with dollar
amounts to donate toward our ongoing efforts to raise
money for VES playground equipment.

Candygrams will be available for purchase by
students, parents or staff from December 11th through
December 19th, mornings from 7:30 until 8:00 AM and
afternoons from 3 to 3:45 PM This is a very popular,
affordable way for kids to show friends they care or
anonymously tell someone how special they are. Join
in the fun and send a candygram to a student for as
little as a quarter. This year there will be new options
for candygrams that are a little nicer, as well as the old
favorites typically offered.

Our Vernonia PTA has decided to participate in the
National PTA Reflections art contest. This means
that if you know any budding artists who have an
interest in submitting their art for competition,
tell them to check with Ms. Allen, the school’s art
teacher or look for a PTA representative coming
soon to talk to their advisory class to give them more
details. Submissions are due in January and the
categories are quite interesting. Artists can submit
entries in: Dance Choreography, Film Production,
Literature, Photography, Music Composition, Visual
Arts, Three Dimensional Visual Arts and Theater. Start
brainstorming now! Submissions must be inspired by
their theme “Believe, Dream, Inspire”. Please don’t
begin your project without considering the rules for
each submission category so talk to Laci Rylands
of Vernonia Community PTA with questions and
clarifications.

Vernonia Community PTA just concluded their fall
catalog fundraiser to help raise money for playground
equipment for Vernonia Elementary School. Thank you
to all members of the community who participated in this
effort. Pictured is Trevor Wolf, who won a ride in the
“principle taxi” to and from his classroom for the day.
His chauffeur was, of course, Aaron Miller. Students who
sold 10 items or more and turned in their tickets were
eligible to win. Two more winners will be drawn after
Thanksgiving break. What a great way to put the “fun” in
fundraising!”
