Hands-on Art
Announces Scholarship

Hands-on Art, (HoA) a non-
profit organization dedicated to
supporting arts and heritage in Vernonia
since 1996, is pleased to announce the
establishment of a scholarship fund for a
VHS student pursuing further education
in art. Applications will be available
shortly through the school. Funding for
this year’s $300 scholarship came from
the silent auction of salmon-themed art at
the Salmon Festival. Hands-on Art thanks
all the Vernonia artists who contributed
their time and talent, and those members
of the community who bid on the items.
Without you, this scholarship wouldn’t
have been possible.

Tax-deductible
donations
to HoA, earmarked specifically for
supplementing the scholarship fund,
may be made at any time during the
year. We encourage our Vernonia artists
to start thinking about salmon-themed
art for next October and hope to see our
scholarship fund grow not only in value,
but into an annual offering.

Donations to the scholarship
fund may be sent to Hands-on Art, PO
Box 195, Vernonia, OR 97064. For
further information, contact Diana Peach
at peachlee123@gmail.com. Thank you!

In 1974, Dr. Jule Plummer

order to provide the community with
affordable, quality veterinary care for
their pets and livestock. Since then,
things have changed.

Readers Lend Their Voices...
To the Editor,

WOEC members, let’s come
together to reclaim OUR utility.

Are you finally fed up with
high utility costs? Do you believe that
you and other cooperative members
have been misinformed as to why rate
increases are necessary and excessive?
As a cooperative member, would you
like to have a say as to how the utility
operates?

These questions and more can
be answered with your direct support
in a quest for lower utility rates. If
you want to get to the bottom of these
issues, your constructive input is
absolutely vital and essential. Please
send all communication with your
concerns to: woec.unitedmembers@
yahoo.com

If you are guilty of contacting
WOEC employees personally, via
telephone, etc, please stop as you
are not helping. Instead you are
directing your anger to those who are
NOT responsible. Your issues can
be resolved using investigative and
resourceful methods.

Vernonia
Hello Vernonia Community,

This is Payton Wolf, a
longtime resident of Vernonia and I
am almost 15 years old. I have been
playing tournament softball for 5
years now. I have reached out to the
community many times over the
last 5 years, for any kind of support
available. I’ve collected bottles/cans,
from several regular donors. I’ve
held  several  fundraisers,  including;
Christmas Wreaths, Pies, Scentsy,
Casino trips, Applebee’s breakfast and
Krispy Kreme donuts, just to name a
few. Every time I’ve reached out to
our community, I am amazed at the
kind of support I get back. This fall I
tried-out and made a very well known
and elite traveling softball team out of
Salem, called the Oregon Titans. The
fees were a lot higher than I’ve ever
had to pay in the past and that was
just to join the team. In addition, I
have to pay out of pocket costs for all
traveling tournaments we participate
in, which are college exposure
tournaments. This fall alone I’ve
already been to Seattle, WA; Medford,
OR; Redding, CA and getting ready
to go to Southern California in 1
week. It costs a lot to participate, but
novel “Myths of the Mirror.”

Ken Bilderback will be avail-
able to sign all three of his books,
“Creek With No Name: How the West
Was Won (and Lost) in Gaston, Or-
egon,” “Wheels on the Bus,” and “Fire
in a Small Town.”

Stacey L. Rech will
be signing her two children’s
books, “Miss Della Webb and
the Wolf,” and “Miss Della
Webb Meets Purdy Hen.”

All of these books
make great holiday gifts. Re-
freshments will be served.

both my parents and I know that the
possible reward for doing this is so
much greater in the end. I have a goal
to play college softball and I know
that it takes a great deal of work to get
there. I hope to get a scholarship either
through my athletics or academics,
which I know is a top priority and I
maintain a 4.0 GPA. This fall I sent
out donation letters to as many local
and surrounding area businesses that I
could think of, asking for any type of
donation. I received several donations
back and would like to specifically
thank each of those businesses; West
Coast Road Construction in Vernonia,
Vernonia Dental, Kathi Knowels, West
Side Rock in Hillsboro and a huge
thank you to the Vernonia Volunteer
Firefighters for their generous
donation! Thanks to all of these kind
and generous people, I am one step
closer to achieving my dreams and
goals. I couldn’t be more grateful,
for such an amazing community who
has graciously supported me over the
years! Thank You.
