New Landscaping Helps Look of School

Jim Krahn knows a thing or two
about grass and landscaping.

That’s why it was great when
he volunteered to help replace some
landscaping at the new Vernonia School
campus this fall. The area was originally
planted as a native garden, but needed
some TLC.

Krahn, a Vernonia School Board
member, is also the Executive Director of
the Oregon Dairy Farmers Association.
Krahn is working to landscape the front
of the school building on both sides of
the front entrance. A few weeks ago he
completed the south side; the north side
still needs to be done but wet weather
has interrupted the work.

Krahn salvaged some cedar logs
and stumps from the school property
and used them to create a naturally
landscaped area which incorporates
already planted native plants into the
plan. Krahn will add some pathways so
students can use the area in their studies
about the natural world, which was the
original intention of the native garden.

Krahn is doing
the work at no cost to
the School District.
He received donations
of manure from two
local dairymen. Krahn
scavenged the rest of the
materials from on site at
the campus and around
town. The 2 x 6’s he used
came from the decking
that was salvaged at the
modular buildings at the
old school campus.

To finish the
project Krahn planted
grass which is starting to
grow.

“I love doing this
kind of stuff,” said Krahn.
“It will look really nice
once the grass is really growing. We
have this beautiful building and we
should have something nice when
people come in.”
