Schools Update ~ A New Year SHaW Clinic Reopens at
School After Summer Break

A new school year is upon us!
Where did the summer go?!
I have met with the district
staff and they are ready to greet the
students on their first day back. Just
as a reminder – the first day of school
will be Friday, September 6 for grades
2-6, freshmen, and foreign exchange
students. The first day for ALL students
will be Monday, September 9.
We are looking forward to a
great school year. This coming year
we are going to continue our focus on
improving student achievement. We
have seen some improvement with
the professional development work
that was done with our staff last year.
They are doing a better job of helping
individual students succeed.
We will also be focusing
on improving all aspects of our
communications with parents. This
will be one of our priorities this year.
If you ever have a question or concern,
please bring it to the attention of
your child’s classroom teacher or the
building principal. If you do not get
satisfactory results in a timely manner,
please contact me at my office (503

Once again I would like to
thank the Vernonia community for
your on-going support of our new
facility, our staff and our students. We
wouldn’t have the things we do today
without you! I hope you get a chance
to stop by the school next week as our
custodians have done an admirable job
of getting it ready for the new school
year.
With school starting on Friday
September 6th for some students, and
Monday September 9th for all students,
this is a good time for parents to check
with the Spencer Health and Wellness
(SHaW) clinic to ensure they have current
insurance and contact information. The
clinic will retain the same hours as last
school year, opening at 7:30 AM and
closing at 1:30 PM Tuesdays and Fridays
on school days.
One big change this year at the
clinic is the layout. As students know,

the elementary school office where
Mrs. Lennon sits is now shared with the
attendance office. The former attendance
office is now the waiting room and
reception for the SHaW clinic. This
change will provide better work flow for
the school staff and improved privacy for
patients.
The clinic provides a wide range
of diagnostic services and is sponsored
by The Public Health Foundation of
Columbia County.

One of the Lady Loggers
strengths last season was serving and
Williams expects that to continue.
Castro, Taylor Titus, and Fletcher are
all very strong and Williams says May-
er-Villeneuve also has a really tough
serve.
Williams has instituted a
strong summer workout plan to help
her players improve. Expect to see im-
provement from the players who uti-
lized these off-season workouts. The
Lady Loggers should be competing at
the top of the league and hopefully get
past the first round of state this year.
The Lady Loggers open their
season at home against Clatskanie on
Thursday, September 5 th and against
De La Salle on Saturday, September
7 th . They also play at home on Tues-
day, September 17 th against Portland
Christian.
Cross Country - Head Coach Byron
Brown expects his boys team to be very
competitive this year; he is still wait-
ing to see how his girls team shapes up
and develops this season.
“My philosophy is that it’s
all practice until the state qualifying
meet,” says Brown. “It’s a short sea-
son and we use our season meets as
training.”
Because of the team aspect
in cross country, Brown says a squad
needs to have five good runners who

On the boys side, Brown has
three strong runners returning to an-
chor his squad: juniors Drew Cheney
and Daniel Rice, and senior Jacob
Medearis. Brown says all three pro-
gressed a lot during last year’s spring
track season and came into the cross
country season in very good shape.
“They have all turned a corner and
have become really good runners,”
says Brown. Brown also has a foreign
exchange student, Paul Lemaron, who
is from Kenya and looks like he will be
a strong addition. Brown is waiting to
see who his fifth scorer will be; expect
to see foreign exchange students Ale-
jandro Rubiero, Emil Hardenberg and
Anton Yakovenko challenging for that
position.
Sophomore Hannah Fleck
looks to be the strongest runner for the
girls. The rest of the squad is made up
of newcomers to running and includes
senior Laura Rice and foreign ex-
change students Johanna Lange, An-
astasia Mihalciuc and Tonia Giordano.
“Hopefully the kids enjoy
it and have fun and they get better at
what they are doing,” says Brown.
“Hopefully they develop a real true
love of running and staying in shape,
which can stay with them their whole
lives.”
The Loggers open their season
at Willamina on September 5 th and host
the Vernonia Invitational on October
16 th .
