It’s Time for the Class of 1978

Class Reunion
The VHS Class of ‘78 would like to invite the classes of
1977 and 1979 to join them in celebrating their 35 th Class
Reunion on Saturday August 31 st .
Come join your friends and classmates at the new
school from 1:00 to 3:30 PM. Then head over to the Scout
Cabin for dinner starting at 4:00 PM; $10 per person potluck/
BBQ. Please bring your favorite side dish. Smoked pig will
be provided; alcohol is permitted so BYOB. There will be
videos of football-hopefully including tapes of the ‘77-’78
state playoff games. Then we’ll finish the party at our own
Ernie Smith’s bar, The All In Pub and Eatery. On Sunday
there will be a scramble golf tournament; for more details

is planning their class reunion in September of this year.

The annual picnic of the Vernonia Society,
VHS “Old Grads” and Oregon American alumni
will be held Sunday, August 18,
from 10 am - 2 pm at Anderson Park. Hot
dogs and sodas will be available for sale or
bring your own picnic lunch. Coffee provided.

The most recent District Meet-
ing was last Tuesday, August 8 th , in Elsie
at the Elderberry Inn. Directors Brian
Baker, Bob VanNatta and Bob Paleck
were there. Marc & Julie Farmer and
WOEC staff David Western, controller,
and Sarah Rossi, secretary were there.
WOEC members Eileen Williams, Jack
& Nancy Phillips and Heather Johansen
attended. Heather is a write-in candidate
for District 5.
We discussed, at length, CBI
(Columbia Broadband Inc), WOEC’s
wholly owned for-profit subsidiary and
its connection to LSN (Light Speed Net-
works), a private corporation special-
izing in high-speed fiber optic internet
connection. LSN is a “closely held” pri-
vate corporation. That means it does not
reveal its financial condition except to
stockholders. Robert VanNatta sits on its
board of directors. He could not reveal
LSN’s financial viability other than “it is
a good investment”. LSN will occupy a
room in WOEC’s building and provide
a pivot point (POP) for commercial us-

It does not produce income to WOEC
other than WOEC, itself, will have free
high-speed hookup. It is hoped, by the
directors, that LSN stock owned by CBI
will produce increased value and income
in the near future. The directors agreed
there is risk involved. They acknowl-
edged that LSN arose from the 2005
failure of Noa-Net, the original provider
of high-speed fiber optic connections
to BPA’s fiber optic system. CBI could
have withdrawn in 2005 but it would
have suffered loss of its $1.3 million dol-
lar investment.
Other matters discussed in-
volved WOEC’s handling of double me-
tering charges, member disconnections,
treatment of member complaints, tree-
trimming by local contractors, timing of
rate-change-input meetings (currently, 1
hour before a decision) and their state-
ment: Board Meetings are for directors,
not members; that members can attend
to observe or make comments at the be-
ginning of a meeting but not to partici-
pate therein, including not being able to
share tabbed binder information because
it contains “classified information.”
