Plans in Place for 2013 Malarkey Trail Ride
Saturday, August 17, 2013 is set
for the 12th Annual Malarkey Trail Ride
and Tack Sale. This event is organized by
the Columbia County Chapter of Oregon
Equestrian Trails. The ride is held on the
Malarkey Ranch, 55948 Columbia River
Hwy, (Hwy 30) Warren, Oregon. Regis-
tration begins at 8:00 and the riders go
out from 9:00 AM to noon. The Tack
Sale of donated and consignment, new
and used items continues to 3:00 PM. A
must-be-present-to–win prize drawing
is held at 2:00 PM. Lunch is sold from
11:00 AM until the food is gone. The
registration fee is $10 per rider which
includes a prize ticket or $25 for youth
groups and families.
Riders will bring their horses in
the main entrance to the Malarkey Ranch
located between Scappoose and St. Hel-
ens, Oregon. There is ample parking for
the 75 to 125 expected participants in a
pasture north of the Clubhouse. Riders
will tack up their horses and proceed to
the registration table to turn in signed
waivers and pay fees. Each participant
will receive a prize ticket and additional
ticket can be purchased for $1 or 6 tickets
for $5. Anyone interested in becoming a
member of Oregon Equestrian Trails can
do so at the registration table.
The ride is rated as easy and in-
cludes challenges such as range cattle
(not to be herded), and road bridges to
cross. The trail uses the pastures of the
Malarkey Ranch, the race track and a
path that follows Scappoose Creek as it
winds its way to Scappoose Bay and the
Columbia River. Optional obstacles will
be set up in the pasture near the end of
the ride. The riders and their horses will
be offered waving flags, bridge over a
blue tarp lake, trash pick-up, drag, lad-
der and other challenges to take at their
own pace. Riders can expect to take 1 ½
to 2 ½ hours to complete the ride and ob-
stacles.

help us Stuff the Bus!
Summer is here and the fall school bells seem
like a long way off, but families prepare all summer to
stock their children’s backpacks with all the necessary
potato salad, chips and drink. Individual
items can be purchased. Lunch is served
in the area under the oak trees near the
registration table and raffle area.
There are actually two prize
drawings. One drawing is the $1 ticket
for items donated and purchased with
funds donated by Local 290 of the
Plumbers and Steamfitters Union. Tick-
ets will be drawn at 2:00 PM in the area
near the registration table and winners
will select their choice of prize. The sec-
ond drawing, the Super Raffle is for spe-
cial prizes like a framed 2013 poster do-
nated by Friends of the Fair. The tickets
for this drawing are $5. Winners must
be present to choose their prize.
The huge tack sale of saddles,
bridles, bits and spurs and all manner of
gear of interest to equestrians will be set
up in the Clubhouse. The trail ride will
take riders past the Clubhouse. Horse
holders will be available so riders can
shop or they can walk back when their
horses are tied to the trailer. Anyone who

Because this adds up in a hurry, the United
Way of Columbia County is proud to host their eighth
“Stuff the Bus” promotion to benefit students in need
throughout Columbia County. Through a united effort,
last year the United Way of Columbia County helped
over 650 children!
The United Way is asking you to participate in
this promotion beginning now through
the end of August. Just look for the
official drop site signs in the windows of
local businesses. They will have boxes
available for donated school supplies.

key Ranch at Fullerton Road. This is for
vehicles only, NO TRAILERS.
Oregon Equestrian Trails is a
non-profit organization whose mission is
to establish and maintain trails and horse
camps in Oregon. The Columbia Coun-
ty Chapter works with Columbia County
Department of Parks and Recreation in
maintaining and improving recreational
opportunities such as Camp Wilkerson
and the C-Z Trail. The funds raised by
this open-to-the-public event will be
used to further trail and horse camping
opportunities in Columbia County. The
club meets the second Wednesday of
each month, usually at the Moose Lodge
at 57317 Old Portland Road, Warren,
Oregon. New members are welcome.

Health Board Receives
$250K Grant continued from front page
The permitting and planning processes
are expected to begin in September for the
project. If funding for the health center is
secured, the Vernonia Health Board hopes
to break ground on their building in January
2014 and complete it by the summer of 2014.
A Request for Proposal for construction of the
project is expected to be released this fall.
The Health Board has received an
extension from FEMA; previously they had
been given until March of 2014 to vacate their

reflecting the spirit of our community
current property. They now have until October
of 2014.
The budget for the Health Center
portion of the Rose Avenue Project is $1.6
million which includes pre-planning and
architectural design, site preparation and off-
site improvements, permitting and other costs,
various in-kind donations, contingency funds,
and final construction. The cost of the health
center building itself is $1.2 million.
