Joy Creek Nursery
Offers Free Classes
Joy Creek believes their
classes are a good way for garden-
ers of all levels to improve their
knowledge of plants and their gar-
dening skills. The classes also of-
fer an opportunity for gardeners
to meet others who share a similar
passion. Joy Creek hopes they give
confidence to the beginner and in-
spiration to the long-time gardener.

Twilight in the Garden
Come and join us at our annual eve-
ning open-house. As the sun goes
down, our gardens undergo an ex-
traordinary transformation. Enjoy
the magic that takes place in the
light of the setting sun. Music and
light refreshment.

Fern Tables and Tiny Shade Gar-
dens - Richie Steffen
Join Richie Steffen as he dem-
onstrates the principles and tech-
niques for creating unique displays
of shade loving plants on table tops
and in unusual containers. Richie’s
naturalistic style uses plants, moss
and weathered wood to form min-
iature woodland gardens that are
perfect for the patio.

Berries and Thorns - with Nadine
Black
The title of this talk grew out of Na-
dine Black’s desire to plant a new
garden along her back fence. This
space had been taken over by a 25-
foot cherry tree, a large compost
pile, and even larger “chipper pile,”
some unkempt raspberries and
some killer blackberry vines from
her neighbor’s yard. This combi-
nation, she discovered, was ideal
habitat for ground nesting birds.
Nadine’s talk is a discussion of her
efforts to replant the space while
still accommodating the birds...
with Berries and Thorns.

I would like to extend
a great big thank you to the Class of
‘73 for the opportunity to see a high
quality, high powered performance
at the Give Back Bash on Saturday!
What a bargain for people my age not
to have to drive or fly miles away,
stay in a hotel, buy meals, park, etc. in
order to watch a profession entertainer
work very hard to give a great show!!
We enjoyed ourselves thoroughly at
both shows. How wonderful if we
could get something like that here
again sometime!

My
neighbor,
Heather
Johansen, is running as a write-in
candidate for District 5’s position on
the WOEC Board of Directors. I am
supporting her candidacy, because she
is the ideal person to represent the
majority of WOEC
members. Please
note, no matter
which district you
live in, you can
write in Heather
Johansen’s name
for District 5 on
your WOEC ballot.
I
was
shocked to learn
that our electric
cooperative has the highest rates in the
state of Oregon.
This is a huge
problem for families and businesses.
Throwing gasoline on the flames,
WOEC plans to DOUBLE the basic
utility charge in a few weeks and
simultaneously increase our rates,
once again, by 10%. I am asking for a
price freeze. Would you support that?
If our schools were producing
the worst students in Oregon, people
would be carrying pickets in the street.
This problem of excessively high rates
for electricity is equally urgent.
Please write in Heather
Johansen for District 5 on your
WOEC ballot and please ask WOEC
for a price freeze.
