Living on a Lake: Water Activities at Fishhawk Lake
By Gayle Rich-Boxman
or herons flying directly above you or
see a fish jump right in front of you. It
is good exercise for both your body and

If you’re in the market to find a
your soul. There are times when it will
special lake property that offers a wide
feel like Fishhawk Lake is all yours and
range of water fun, Fishhawk Lake is
yours alone!
THE place! It’s a private lake that never
feels over-crowded. Anytime from
June on into September, you can swim
(without freezing), hang out on the beach
or hit the water in some kind of boat or
other type of watercraft.

At this private lake community,
kayaking and canoeing are huge modes
of water transportation. Early in the
morning, when the mist is rising and all
is quiet, you can easily slip your kayak
into the water from the shoreline which
is mostly shallow with a silty-soft bottom

You might want to get yourself
on a paddleboard—the newest water
sport--perfect for all ages! It does take
three things; a surfboard (which is fine),
or an actual paddleboard, which has a
rudder on it and it can be any length,
a paddle to steer with and a sense of
balance. Standing paddleboarding is
what I have seen most often in the
last couple of summers. I even saw a
woman doing some yoga moves on hers
before she stood up and paddled around
Fishhawk Lake!

Other water activities involve
something called “pedal boating” A pedal
boat (sometimes referred to as a paddle
so that you won’t hurt delicate feet and
boat) is a very sturdy, human-powered,
head around the 80-100AC lake, making
flat-bottomed type of watercraft, and
discoveries that many on land would
great for kids because it doesn’t capsize
never see. You could have bald eagles

easily like canoes and kayaks can. It
does take some work, as you are pushing
a lever/pedal down with your feet that
causes a small paddle wheel on the back
to go around, thus pushing you through
the water! It’s not quiet, but kids of all
ages love it, and usually it’s a two-
seater, so a parent and a small child
can go together—a great way to get
rid of all of that excess energy kids
have!
  Electric-powered pontoons are
a higher-end type of watercraft and
they vary in size up
to 21’, the largest you
are allowed to have
on Fishhawk Lake.
They are often called
party boats, and for
good reason! You
can get places fast, or
throw out an anchor
in the middle of the lake
and sit there for hours,
taking in the sun, popping
into the water to cool off
and even hook up with
other pontoons and make
it a REAL party!! Libation and food are
extra, but you can bring those with you
on the boat.

Sailing is possible as the winds
usually kick up in the later afternoon and
small one-person sailboats work quite
well, for the expert or the novice. You
won’t usually bump into many people,
so it could offer you a great opportunity
to test your skills as a new sailor.

Of course a big draw for this
community is the FISHING. Members
and family/friends of members can
come and fish off a dock, either member
owned or one of the docks located by the
clubhouse. Pontoons are a great way to
fish in good or inclement weather if you
have a top. You could use a little drift
boat, with a small electric trolling motor
on it. I’ve even seen people in kayaks,
canoes or the rare blow-up rubber-type
of boat be used for fishing. So long as
you own property at Fishhawk Lake or
are a guest, you can fish for cutthroat
trout and keep two per day during the
fishing season which is Memorial Day
weekend to October 31 st . Fishhawk
Lake is not stocked, and has salmon and
steelhead, as well as cutthroat trout, but
this year you can’t angle for salmon or
steelhead.

If you are looking for fun on a
private lake without having to jostle with
a bunch of people to get on the water,
Fishhawk Lake might just be what the
doctor ordered for peace and relaxation.
