Funding for the program came from the estate of a friend of a friend who recently passed away and had heard about the program before she passed and wanted to help. “She gave us $3,000 in April and on Mother’s Day she passed away,” says Gump. “We have a little angel.” Gump found help from local 501(c)(3) Hands On Art who has provided financial pass-through assistance for the program. Urban says the program focuses on learning skills including reading, listening, and sign language skills. Art projects provide development of fine motor skills. Music and dance will also be incorporated into the program this summer. The goal of J.B.O. is to provide each child, regardless of skill level, an ability to com- pete in baseball against other players of similar skill and age. Players are divided into separate divisions based on age and skill level; the Senior National team is made up of boys aged 13 and 14. All players are required to play a certain number of innings in every game. Walters says pitching has been a real strength for his team this year. “Our pitching has been outstand- ing,” says Walters. “At the county tournament they had a radar gun and Bailey Morrison threw the ball 72 mph, which is really moving at this age. He consis- tently throws strikes and has great off-speed pitches.” Through the county tournament Morrison had faced 141 batters this season and struck out 71. Butcher and Elliott also throw hard and consistently get the ball over the plate. “When all three of these guys are on, no one can hit them,” says Walters. Walters says team defense has also been a strong part of the team’s success this season. In the outfield, Bevill plays centerfield and, according to Walters, cov- ers, “...a huge amount of ground.” Adam Haun plays left field and newcomers Ryland and Bennett have been sharing duties in right field.
