The

is
looking to put together a local
contractors list of MBE/WBE
(Minority Business Enterprise,

we can send RFPs/RFQs to for
watershed council projects. This
is in addition of course, to our
current list of contractors. If you
are an MBE/WBE in Clatsop,

please send me an email with your

Readers Lend Their Voices...
To the Vernonia Community,

If you live or own a business in
Vernonia, then you may be receiving a
letter in the mail soon with a short survey.
Before you throw it in the recycling bin,
please read on. The survey is part of
an ongoing community-based research
project called the “Vital Vernonia
Indicator Project.”

Oregon
State
University
Extension Service is collaborating with
Vernonia’s community leaders on the
Vital Vernonia Indicator Project. The
purpose of this project is to document
“community vitality” in Vernonia: in
other words, whether economic, social,
educational, and environmental goals
are being met to ensure a good quality
of life and well-being for the people who
live here.

Many organizations, agencies
and community sectors are cooperating
on this project. Each is providing
information that together illustrates
the vitality of this community. For
example, we are learning about student
achievement, teen substance abuse rates,
flood resilience, employment rates, and
other indicators of community vitality
from these cooperators. However, there
is some information that only individual
people and businesses can provide,
related to their way of life and business
as Vernonia residents or business owners.
For this reason we are implementing two
surveys: one for businesses and one for
residents.

Later this month, the household
survey will be mailed to a random
selection of all the households in
Vernonia. It should take no more
than ten minutes to complete. If your
household receives the survey, one adult
(18 or older) should complete it. Full
instructions, along with a postage-paid
return envelope, will be included in the
mailer.

The business survey will go out
to all the businesses in the area. These
surveys will have several questions,
however several of them are industry-
specific. The industry-specific questions
will require data that will need to be
looked up. Many businesses will not
need to answer the industry-specific
questions. This data has to do with
different indicators of economic vitality.

Please note that both surveys
will be anonymous. They do not ask for
any identifying information such as your
name, business name, or address. The
aggregated data will be shared publicly,
but nobody will ever know whether you
took the survey, nor will any individual
responses be shared.

Participation in this project is
voluntary and you may refuse to answer
any question on the survey. However,
full involvement from the community
is vital to the quality of our data. We
would appreciate timely responses if
you receive a survey from us. Your
participation is very important to us.

We expect to finish collecting all
of the data for this project by the end of
the summer. Later this year, the results
of our study will be shared widely
with the community. Contact us if you
would like to learn more about the Vital
Vernonia Indicator Project or how you
can become involved.
