In Memory of...
Vernonia Head Start Still Taking Applications
Head Start, a federally fund-
ed pre-school program, is seeking
students for the 2012-2013 school
year. Applications are being taken
from all three and four year olds in
Vernonia. Recruitment for fall en-
rollment is now in progress and will
continue until September. If parents
are interested in enrollment informa-
tion they are urged to phone immedi-
ately.
Perspective students must be three or
four years old by September 1, 2012.

Eleanor “Ellie” E. Barstad
September 29, 1924 – May 15, 2013
A true Oregon native she was born in
Newport, Oregon. Ellie passed away May 15 th
in Forest Grove, Oregon. She was a beloved
wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother
and great great grandmother.
During World War II, she welded in the
shipyards and became a waitress after the war.
After marrying Maurice Barstad in 1947, they
later build a house on the Columbia River at
Dodson. In 1968 they cleared land in Vernonia
and built their house on 15 acres.
Ellie was a hard worker and a great
cook. She is proceeded in death by Maurice
her husband of 65 years.
She is survived by son Terry, daughter Lois and
stepdaughter Sharon, 9 grandchildren, 14 great
grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren.
She will be remembered and missed forever.
