Speaking of Birthdays
Kathy Larsen celebrated her recent
birthday with a bunch of friends at the All
In Pub and Eatery. As many of you know,
Kathy operates the Made in Vernonia
store in town and is a great promoter of the
community of Vernonia
and all of our artists,
crafters, woodworkers
and everyone else who
makes things around
here. For Kathy’s party,
Rachel Langmaid made
her quickly-becoming-
famous
carrot
cake,
scut·tle·butt noun \ˈskə-təl-ˌbət\
a : a cask on shipboard to contain freshwater for a day’s use
b : a drinking fountain on a ship or at a naval or marine installation
Scuttlebutt in slang usage means rumor or gossip deriving from the nautical
term for the cask used to serve water (or, later, a water fountain).
Water for immediate consumption on a sailing ship was conventionally stored
in a scuttled butt: a butt (cask) which had been scuttled by making a hole in it so the
water could be withdrawn. Since sailors exchanged gossip when they gathered at the
scuttlebutt for a drink of water, scuttlebutt became Navy slang for gossip or rumours. The
term corresponds to the colloquial concept of a water cooler in an office setting, which at
times becomes the focus of congregation and casual discussion.
Vernonia’s Voice intends to use this column, not to spread gossip or rumors but
to share tidbits of news about the people and goings on in our community.
which was simply beautiful, like all of Rachel’s
creations. The crew at the All in Pub did a
fantastic job handling the large and overflowing
table of friends who joined Kathy for her evening
of celebration. How old is Kathy you might ask?
Well, we’re not telling, but we’ll just say “Old
enough to know better, but young enough not to
care!” Happy Birthday, Kathy!
In Case You Missed It Vernonia had a good turn
out for the St. Patrick’s Day Parade.
