Vernonia Students Take Part
in Sustainability Day
Students from the Vernonia
Schools took part in Sustainability Day
by working at the wetlands on the old
O-A Mill site.
The day was planned by the
Vernonia High School Forestry Class.
Students from the class researched and
chose fast growing native plants and
trees to plant around the perimeter of
the wetland.
Plants like salal, huckleberry,
salmonberry and Oregon grape were
planted for their ability to provide food
and habitat for birds and wildlife. Stu-
dent planted trees that adapt to the wet
heavy soils in the area and provide
shade, like hemlock, western red cedar,
willow, and Sitka spruce. Students also
worked to remove invasive species on
the site.
Schools Update
By Dr. Ken Cox
I would just like to take a mo-
ment and brag (just a little) about the
students and staff of the Vernonia
School District.
First of all we have our VHS
Girls’ Basketball team that was first in
our district playoffs, who only lost six
games during their entire season. Our
boys went to the state playoffs in Pend-
leton for the second straight year and
came home with the 2A 6 th place trophy.
Our wrestling team sent four student
athletes to the state meet; T John Wolf
returned with a 4 th place medal.
opening of the Oregon State Senate. As
you can see from the picture we were
honored to visit with Senator Betsy
Johnson, who sponsored the band and
their performance of a patriotic medley.
Commissioner Tony Hyde also stopped
by while we were there. I was also able
to take two of our band members and
visit with Representatives Brad Witt
and Deborah Boone.
We have a lot to be proud of,
in addition to our new schools. At the
January board meeting we heard a re-
port that student discipline, from last
year to this year, was much improved.
In fact, at all three grade levels, elemen-
tary, middle and high school, there were
only half as many referrals for misbe-
The VHS band at the state capital with Superintendent Ken Cox, Senator Betsy
Johnson and Columbia County Commissioner Tony Hyde.
Just this past week our FIRST
Robotics Team the Loggerbots (check
them out on Youtube) came in 3 rd out
of 59 teams from all sizes of schools
throughout Oregon, Washington and
Idaho at the Memorial Coliseum. This
was only their second year of compe-
tition and they constructed an amazing
Frisbee throwing robot.
Last month, February 19 th to
be exact, the Vernonia High School
Band (last year’s 1A/2A State Champi-
ons) had the privilege of playing at the
havior during the first half of this year
compared to the same period last year.
I believe that this last fact is di-
rectly attributable to the improved envi-
ronment and attitudes of both students
and staff in our new schools.
Once again, I thank the mem-
bers of the community who contribute
each year to our schools through their
property taxes and to the many indi-
viduals, corporations, businesses and
foundations that made our new schools
possible.
