Wauna Annual Meeting
to be Held in Vernonia
Wauna Federal Credit Union
will hold their 46 th Annual Meeting
in Vernonia on Saturday March 16,
2013. The meeting will be held in the
Vernonia Schools Commons, 1001
Missouri Avenue. Free tickets are
available at any Wauna branch.
The meeting begins at 2:00
PM with a Social. Light refreshments
will be served. The business meeting
begins at 3:00 PM. There will be over
$2,000 in door prizes given away
along with a commemorative gift.
The meeting is open to all Wauna
Federal Credit Union members.

The Columbia County Fair
and Rodeo Board is looking for
volunteers to help get ready for the
Fair this year.
The Fair Board meets on the
second Monday of each month at 6:00
PM in the 4 H Building. In addition,
volunteers are meeting every Saturday
at 8:30 AM at the fair office. The
public and community volunteers are
welcome!
The Columbia County Fair
and Rodeo will be held on July 17-21
in St. Helens.

To the Editor,
The Lions Club of Vernonia
received a note from Don and De De
Webb, thanking us for the Christmas fruit
plate we had delivered to them shortly
before Christmas. In closing their note,
they added “It would be interesting to
know all of your projects.” Well, Don
and De De I will go over some of the
highlights from this last year.
Be a Weather Watcher
CoCoRaHS is an acronym for the
Community Collaborative Rain, Hail and
Snow Network. CoCoRaHS is a unique,
non-profit, community-based network
of volunteers who measure precipitation
in their own backyards. By participating
in CoCoRaHS you learn firsthand about
your own local weather patterns and help
scientists develop better precipitation
maps, and over the long term, better
forecasting.
According to the Oregon Climate
Service, more CoCoRaHS volunteers are
needed in rural areas, especially in areas
with elevation changes. Currently there
are only a few active stations in Columbia
County.
It is easy to participate in
CoCoRaHS. All you need is a CoCoRaHS
approved rain gauge, a place to set it up, a
willingness to check your gauge daily (or
as frequently as possible), and a computer
so that you can log in and record your data.

Columbia County – Master Gardeners,
The Lions were able to provide eye
exams and nine pairs of new glasses for
families in Vernonia. We brought in the
Mobile Screening Unit for the School
and for the Public Health Fair, to check
eyesight, hearing and blood pressure.
We were very happy last May
that we were able to up our scholarship
funds to $4,500 for the graduating
Seniors of Vernonia High School.
Also, we have made several
donations of new socks, underwear
and personal hygiene products to the
Vernonia Schools over the past year.
In June the Lions went to Gales
Creek Camp for Children with Diabetes
for the annual cleaning of the Boys and
Girls dorms. We also collect funds for
Gales Creek from the little cans we’ve
placed in Mini Mart, New Hong Kong,
both Hardware Stores and Black Bear.

In July we worked with the
Vernonia Schools on “Move the School
Day”. We served a BBQ lunch (with
the help of State Senator Betsy Johnson)
to approximately 80 volunteers at the
Vernonia Mill Pond (aka Vernonia Lake).
Speaking of the Mill Pond,
the Lions working in collaboration
with the Isaac Walton League, Robert
Bradley - Biologist with Oregon Dept.
of Fish & Wildlife, the City of Vernonia,
and with a donation from the Oregon
Bass & Panfish Club, we applied for a
grant from R & E (Fish Restoration &
Enhancement Program). We were all
happy when we were awarded a $34,870
grant to make much needed repairs to the
docks (new flotations under docks and
new guardrails). We are now working
on a future grant application for a new
pumping system to keep the water level
up and fresher during summer months.
In August we helped the City
of Vernonia, the Vernonia Police,
Fire and First Responders along with
Sentry Market, and this last year, the
Ladies from Dairy Farmers of Oregon
who brought Ice Cream to the annual
“Vernonia Night Out” - BBQ. It was
wonderful, free BBQ and ice cream for
everyone.
We were able to give a $500
donation to Vernonia Cares Food Bank
to help purchase Turkeys for the Holiday
Boxes. In February we had held a
protein canned food drive and last April

we held a “Spam and Eggs” fundraiser.
Both were held at Sentry Market for the
Food Bank. We hope to soon be doing
another “SPAM” fundraiser in a month
or so. (We’d better talk to Randy pretty
soon!)
Last St. Patty’s Day we held a
Corned Beef and Cabbage fundraiser to
help Ryan Roberts raise funds for his
Kidney Transplant. This St. Patty’s Day
we will be working with the Vernonia
Head Start Parent Committee with
a “Spaghetti Feed” fundraiser at the
Scout Cabin. We’ll be helping out in the
kitchen.
The Lions got out and cleaned
trash up on Hwy 47 North (Mist Dr.)
from the Green Bridge to Stoney Point
Road. Also, with the help of Vernonia
Cub Scouts, the City of Vernonia and
other citizens of Vernonia, we placed
Flags and Crosses on the graves of
Veterans in our local cemeteries.
A new project we just started
working on with Vernonia Schools is the
“Kids Bike Safety Fair,” scheduled for
May 4 th .
Well, Don and De De, I hope
this gives you an idea of some of the
things we have been up to this last year.
Thanks for asking! And, one last thing
in closing, a lot of things we do are
possible by our fundraising, so Vernonia,
please stop by during Jamboree and have
a BBQ Sandwich or maybe, for the more
adventurous, come to one of our Texas
Hold’em games at the All-In-Pub, or one
of our other fundraisers.

This April, they will be putting on several
sessions where you can purchase the rain
gauge, learn how to set it up and read it, and
how to record your data with CoCoRaHS.
The cost of the gauge is $26.
To register for the upcoming
session, please call Vicki at the Extension
office, 503-397-3462. Pre-registration by
March 27 th is important so that they know
how many rain gauges to order. If you
would like to order a gauge but are unable
to attend a training session, please call the
office.
