Jessica Shafer and Bill Edwards Albert B. “Bert” Brunsman
Mike and Amy Shafer of
Hillsboro announce the engagement of
their daughter, Jessica Shafer, to Bill
Edwards. Bill is the son of Butch and Barb
Edwards of Hillsboro. Grandparents are
Mike and Marleen Shafer of Vernonia,
Marge Anderson of Buxton, and June
Olsen and Marie McDonald, both
of Tillamook. The couple currently
resides in Gales Creek. Jessica is a 2008
graduate of Hillsboro High School, a
2012 graduate of Portland Community
College, and works as a teller at US
Bank in Banks. Bill is a 2007 graduate
of Hillsboro High School and works
as an electrician with Cochran Electric
in Tigard. The couple is planning a
September wedding at Langdon Farms.

Albert B. “Bert” Brunsman,
95, a former longtime resident of the
Vernonia community, late of Battle
Ground, Washington, died Sunday
morning, February 3, 2013 at his home.
A Celebration of Life Service
was held on Friday, February 8, 2013
at 1:00 PM at the Fuiten, Rose &
Hoyt Funeral Home, 741 Madison
Avenue in Vernonia, with Chaplain
David Mossholder, of PeaceHealth
Hospice Southwest, officiating. Lodge
Rites were held under the auspices of
Holbrook Masonic Lodge A.F. & A.M.
# 30 in Forest Grove. Burial Rites and
Interment followed at the Vernonia
Memorial Cemetery, 2080 Bridge Street
in Vernonia with Full Military Honors
under the direction of the American
Veterans Honor Guard.
Family and friends were invited
to attend a reception immediately
following the cemetery rites, held at the
Vernonia Scout Cabin, 901 Park Drive in
Vernonia.

BERNARDUS
“BERT” BRUNSMAN was born on
January 12, 1918 in LaMoure, North
Dakota, on the family farm, the son
of the late Albert Alexander and Dora
(Galener) Brunsman. He was raised and
received his education in the LaMoure
community.
He was a veteran of World War
II and the Korean Conflict, having joined
the United States Army in 1939. He
served for 17 years in Communications.
After World War II and Korea he had
jurisdictions over all Communications
West Coast between the Mexican and
Canadian borders. He received his
Honorable discharge in 1953 at Fort
Warden, Washington at the rank of Chief

Bert was united in marriage to
Isabelle Matilda Butt on April 24, 1942
in San Francisco, California. Following
their marriage, they made their home in
the Vernonia community for over sixty
years until the town flooded on December
7, 2007. Following the flood they moved
to Battle Ground, Washington to reside
with their daughter, Candace and family,
where they have resided since.
After moving to the Vernonia
community, he co-owned and operated
Brunsman Hardware Store with his
brother David. He later bought his
brother’s share and owned and operated
the store for nine years until 1979, when
he sold and retired. During this period he
also served a term on the City Council.
Bert was a member of Holbrook
Masonic Lodge, A.F. & A.M # 30 in
Forest Grove. As a 32nd Degree member
of both Scottish Rite and York Rite he
was also a Shriner. He also belonged
to the Veteran’s of Foreign Wars and
American Legion Post # 119, both in
Vernonia.
Among his special interests
he enjoyed gardening, reading western
books, his favorite stories were “Never
Cry Snake” and “Mean Tents” by writer,
Patrick McManus. Bert also enjoyed
his club work and had a special love for
spending time with his grandchildren.
Bert is preceded in death by
his parents, Albert Alexander and Dora
Brunsman; his son Albert Edward
Brunsman on November 30, 1968 and
his three brothers, John Brunsman,
David Brunsman and Frank Brunsman
and his two sisters, Eleanor Cansdale
and Marian Little.
Survivors include his wife,
Isabelle M. Brunsman, of the family
home in Battle Ground, Washington;
his two daughters and a son-in-law,
Sharon L. Kelley, of Portland, Oregon
and Candace M. and Hans Rosengreen,
of Battle Ground, Washington and his
sister and brother-in-law, Dorothy and
Don Spencer, of Placitas, New Mexico.
Also surviving are his five
grandchildren and a spouse, Albert
Alan Ammerman, Aaron Clifford and
Crystal Ammerman, Deanna Curtis,
Maria Rosengreen and Nina Roberts;
his thirteen great-grandchildren, Dutch
Ammerman, Carter Ammerman, Sullivan

Scott Arthur Long
April 26, 1958-January 10, 2013
Scott Arthur Long died in
Portland on January 10, 2013 at the age
of 54.
Scott was born in Oregon City to parents
Marvin and Sandra Long on April 26,
1958. He was raised in Oregon City and
attended Oregon City High School. In
high school he was on the swim team and
was rated the eighth-fastest swimmer in
the world at the age of fourteen. In 1982
he married Geraldine Layva and served
in the U.S. Navy from 1982-1983.
Scott worked at Shindaiwa for
ten years as a warehouse lead until they
closed the warehouse and relocated to
another state.
He liked camping, fishing, golf,
darts, swimming and animals. He also
loved playing poker tournaments for the
Lions Club in Vernonia and was a five-
time Champion at Texas Hold ‘Em. He
was a real people person who was ready
to cheer you up when you were down.
Mr. Long is survived by his wife,
Geraldine Long of Milwaukie, father
Marvin Long; sister Nancy Schnieder;
brothers Ron and Steve Long; aunt Sandi
Young and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceeded in death by his
mother Sandra Long and grandparents
Vera and Harry Moyer.
There will be a private service
held at a later date.
