“Have you ever wondered what a human life is
worth?”
This historical fiction novel is told by fifteen-
year-old Lina of Lithuania. It is June 1941 when there
is a knock at the door that changes her life forever.
The Soviet Secret Police (NKVD) gives Lina, her
mother, and younger brother only minutes to pack.
They are then ushered to cattle carts where they begin
a heart-wrenching journey of torture, starvation, and
humiliation in Soviet labor camps.
Sepetys does a fantastic job of bringing to the
forefront a part of history that is often overlooked. The
Baltic region not only endured the horrors of Hitler
but also the equally atrocious suffering under Stalin.
Military personnel, engineers, teachers, librarians and
many more were taken from their homes and sent to
prisons and forced labor camps that proved just as
horrific as any of the concentration camps under Hitler.
I highly recommend this book for both our
young adult readers
(12+) and adults alike
bringing a different

“Some wars are about bombing. For the people
of the Baltic’s, this war was about believing. In 1991,
after fifty years of brutal occupation, the three Baltic
countries regained their independence, peacefully and
with dignity. They chose hope over hate and showed
the world that even through the darkest night, there is
light…..These three tiny nations have taught us that
love is the most powerful army. Whether love of friend,
love of country, love of God, or even love of enemy –
love reveals to us the truly miraculous nature of the
human spirit.” – Ruta E. Sepetys
