Meet the Exchange Students
The Vernonia School District once again
has the pleasure of hosting a large con-
tingent of foreign exchange students.
This year twenty students have joined
the junior and senior classes and the
community for the 2012-2013 school
year. Vernonia’s Voice is happy to help
introduce these young visitors in a series
of articles in this and upcoming issues.
Anton Kelm is from Hamburg, Ger-
many and is living with Ron, Trish and
Ronnie Maldonado. Anton is a junior
and is playing football this fall; he says
he also plans on playing basketball and
baseball this year. He has traveled to
the United States before—he says his
parents got married in Las Vegas and
so the whole family traveled together
on the west coast. He has also traveled
around Europe. Anton says he likes the
country feel of Vernonia and also likes
that everyone seems to know each other.

Art at Vernonia High School
Students in Ms. Allen’s Intermediate/Advanced Art Class have been
working on an interesting project. The students have been learning about using
more than one art material through a mixed media project. Students had a chance
to practice by combining contour drawing, shading, water color painting, and
sewing to create beautiful pieces
of work.
Students drew their own hands,
keeping the pencil on the paper the
entire time in one continuous line
and then learned about shading.
“I never knew how to do shading
before,” said art student Sara
McMahon. “Once we learned it,
it makes the drawing look more
three dimensional and realistic.”
After completing the drawing
the students learned about
different styles and techniques for
water color painting and finished
the piece by cutting out the hands
and then sewing them to the

on her art project.

“Often times artists do
incorporate
things
that are from other
disciplines,”
said
instructor Allen. “There
is a feminist artist named
Miriam Shapiro who
uses a lot of cloth and
quilt making techniques
in her art work. She also
paints and so we wanted
to try to incorporate
something like that in
our work here.”
