Buddies
Don and Nancy Dailey, who
raise llamas on their farm,
found this stranger in a
fenced pasture with one of
their male llamas. The young
deer has been living with the
male for over a week and
the two seem to be getting
along famously, even bed-
ding down together at night.
Male llamas are generally
known for being unfriendly;
their natural instinct is to
protect their territory from
other males. But this big guy
doesn’t seem to mind his new
little friend.

Whooping Cough
continued from page 7
lack of air.
The tiniest chil-
dren have such small air-
ways that when racked
with whooping cough,
sometimes for weeks
on end, they struggle to
breathe and may have trou-
ble eating or drinking.
Children should
get a series of four vaccina-
tions at 2, 4, 6 and 15 to 18
months, and again at age 4
to kindergarten, according
to the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention.
Everyone else – infants’
parents, siblings age 10
and older, grandparents,
caregivers and even adults
who aren’t around small
children should be vacci-
nated.

Vernonia’s Voice subscribers Bill and Kathi (Medges-VHS ‘73) Knowles
spent two weeks vacationing in Switzerland and Germany.
This picture shows them in the Swiss Alps at Rothorn Kulm (7,700
feet) where they ate lunch with a panoramic view of the Brienzer-Rothorn
mountains after climbing for 1-3/4 hours in a cog-wheel steam-engined train.
Kathi said “...a picture can’t do the scenery justice. It was so beautiful!”
