VHS Fall Sports Report
Volleyball—The Lady Loggers are look-
ing to find their rhythm after an up and
down start to the season. The team has
played well at times but has struggled
against tougher opponents. A key 3-0
win over division rival Gaston on Oc-
tober 4, in the first game in the almost-
completed new gymnasium, will hope-
fully help the girls turn things around.
Head coach Teresa Williams and
her team have a 7-6 over all record and
were sitting in third place in the North-
west League, East Division with a 3-4
record after defeating second place Gas-
ton. The Vernonia squad has had to play
most of their early season games on the
road as they waited for the new gym-
nasium to be completed. The team can
look forward to four of their final five
games at home in front of their own fans.
For the Lady Loggers, Sara Mc-
Mahon has been leading the way on both
offense and defense. Cierra Henson has
really picked up her game this season,
playing both offense and defense and be-
come a team leader on the court. Junior
Stephanie Castro seems to have found
her swing and is starting to hit the ball
well from both the outside and the mid-
dle. Julie Fletcher also looks like she
is gaining confidence as an outside hit-
ter. Sophomore setter Taylor Titus had
a nice game against Gaston and looks
to be settling into her role as a varsity
player. Samantha Wallace and Brittany
Young are helping out as solid defenders
on the back line. Exchange student Hel-
ena Veselkova also played a significant
role in the middle of the front line in the
win over Gaston.
One improvement this season
has been the consistency and effective-
ness of the serves. McMahon, Hen-
son, Titus, Castro as well as Veselkova
against Gaston are all consistently put-
ting their serves low and hard over the
net, which has been an extra weapon for
the team.
The Lady Loggers face Neah-
Kah-Nie at home on October 9, Knappa
at home on October 11, travel to Nes-
tucca on October 13 and return home on
October 18 to play Faith Bible on “Pack
the Gym Night, ” and finish the season at
home against Riverdale on October 22.
League playoffs begin October 23.
Cross Country—The story so far this
season for the Loggers
has been Senior Saman-
tha Lindauer, is running
Cross Country for the first
time and is making quite an
impression. On September
16th at the Oregon Epis-
copal Invitational, thirteen
schools were competing,
including many of the
best runners in the state.
According to Logger’s
head coach Byron Brown,
Lindauer stunned every-
one by winning the girls
race in only her 2nd cross
country race. “It is virtu-
ally impossible to overstate
what Sammy has already
accomplished this season,”
said Brown.
“She is a
prime example of what can
happen when you combine

great talent with hard work.” In her first
race, Lindauer finished 2nd overall in
the 3A/2A/1A pre-district meet at the
Tualatin Hills Sports Complex.
Lindauer continued her amazing
season on September 21st at the Nestuc-

first. Lindauer then led from start to fin-
ish on September 27 while winning the
Northwest League Championship, held
at the new school campus in Vernonia.
Maina Martin from France and Rowan
Cheney have also been running well for
the VHS girls.
“Sammy has been to State every
year in track, but always in the shorter
sprints,” said Brown about Lindauer.
“It’s very unusual for an athlete to be
outstanding in both sprints and distance,
and it just shows what a unique and spe-
cial kind of athlete Sammy is.”
For the boys, Nathan Fleck is the
team captain and leader. Fleck finished
3rd at the Northwest League Champion-
ships. At Nestucca Fleck finished 5th and
Logger Jacob Mederis took 7th. “Jacob
Medaris has been working very hard and
is quickly developing into a first class
distance runner,” said coach Brown.
Dan Rice, Dylan Shay and Drew Cheney
have also been running well for the boys.
The next meet was scheduled
for Sat. October 6 at Stub Stewart
State Park. The Vernonia Invitational
is scheduled for October 18. Come out
to the new school campus and cheer on
Sammy Lindauer, Mathan Fleck, Jacob
Mederis and all the rest of the Loggers!
