VHS Fall Sports Preview
continued from page 11
welcome the return of junior
Stephanie Castro, who sat out last
season while recovering from knee
surgery. Castro brings a real athletic
presence to the front line and has a
big swing to go with a nice touch on
the ball. Castro will be joined on
the front line by senior co-captains
Samantha Wallace and Cierra
Henson. Wallace is a reliable player
and Hensen has really improved as
a player in both her knowledge of
the game and her intensity. Watch
for sophomore outside hitter Julia
Fletcher, who moved up to the
varsity squad at the end of last
season. Fletcher is also very athletic
and should be a nice addition to the
rotation as an outside hitter. Also
watch for Tori Dalebroux, a junior,
to have a breakout season this year.
Dalebroux just seemed to get better
and better last year as she gained
confidence as the season went on.
She should be a key component to
the team this year, playing either in
the middle or outside.
One question mark for
Williams is who will do the setting
this year. Right now it looks like
sophomore Taylor Titus and Castro
may share the duties.
Defensively
the
Lady
Loggers are not quite as experienced
as they are on offense. The back line
should be anchored by McMahon
and Hensen along with sophomores
Mackenzie Titus and
Brittany
Young.
Three exchange students
also made the varsity team this year.
Iryna Budkevych, Yuliya Pestova,
and Helena Veselkova were all very
excited to make the team and should
see some playing time this season.
The Lady Loggers will start
out their season with five straight
league road matches while they
wait for their new gymnasium to be
completed. The schedule calls for
the gym to be open in time for the
Vernonia Tournament on September
29. The schedule then favors the
Loggers as they have most of their
games at home towards the end of
the season.
This just could be the year
for the Lady Loggers. Offensively
they have loads of talent. They
will bring a lot of experience and
athleticism to their matches and have
some good height up front. Last
year they led Days Creek by ten
points in two games that they ended
up losing, proving they can play with
any team in the state. This year they
should challenge for first place in the
always tough Northwest League and
should make some waves in the state
tournament.
Cross Country—The Loggers
have a lot of talent returning this
year. At the top of the list is senior
Nathan Fleck, who is the defending
league champion.
Head Coach
Byron Brown is also expecting a lot
out of Junior Jacob Medaris, and
sophomores Dan Rice and Drew
Cheney. “We are one good runner
away from being a pretty solid team
on the men’s side,”says Brown.
“Hopefully, we’ll develop the talent
to fill that need.”
The women’s side also
looks pretty strong with Gloria
Ramirez, Sammy Lindauer and
Rowan Cheney anchoring the team.
Hanna Fleck and Maina Martin show
promise; if they develop into strong
runners the Lady Loggers should be
pretty competitive. Foreign exchange
students Karina Tolmacheva and
Hanna Hoffer are just getting started
in the sport.
“In short, the girls team is
stronger than last year’s team and it’s
hard to say yet about the men, but
they have the potential to be better
than last year’s team,” says Brown.
The league championship
will be hosted by Vernonia on Sept
27 at the new school. “We are laying
out a course now,” says Brown.
Randy Shockey’s engineering class
will be designing the course.
