VHS Fall Sports Preview
Football—The
Vernonia
Loggers
return to the gridiron with the hopes of
continuing to build on the improvements
that were started last season by new head
coach Gordon Jarmin. After a rough
start, the Loggers ended last season with
three straight wins and barely missed
qualifying for the playoffs by a tie-
breaker. This year Jarmin hopes to see
continued growth in the program.
The team is mix of players
with some varsity experience and a
large contingent of foreign
exchange students, most who
are playing football the first
time.
Coach
Jarmin
has
some good experience at
quarterback and will probably
utilize both senior Austin
Cutright and junior Tim
Jennings during the season.
Mikol Pihl and Jonathon
Anderson will be the starters in
the back field, but also expect
to see Bo Clark and exchange
student Hjalmar Lijedahl get
some carries. Senior T. John
Wolf along with sophomore
Damian Young and junior
Bridger Stewart should all see
some playing time at tight end.
Senior Jake Titus, who was
named 2 nd Team All League

2012
last season returns at
wide receiver and will
be joined by senior
Jesse Edgar, junior
Ronnie
Maldonado
and exchange student
Ezio Rusticali. The
offensive line will be
anchored by seniors
Dawson Shay and
Ethan Johnston, juniors Jarred Whitton
and Jerimiah Hammons,
exchange
student Stephan Scheer, and sophomore
D.J. Grady.
On defense the Loggers look
to be tough. Anderson will start at
defensive end and will be joined by
Shay, Hammons, Grady and Whitton.
Cutright will start at outside linebacker.
Edgar has looked good at cornerback.
On special teams exchange
student Alex Budde will handle place
kicking duties. Cutright was dangerous
last year on kick and punt returns and
should see duty there again this year.
The Loggers play their first home
games against Gervais on September 14
and Santiam on September 21. They
11
open league play on October
5 at home against Gaston.
The Homecoming Game this
year will be against Knappa
on October 19.
Volleyball—Head
Coach
Teresa Williams and the Lady
Loggers should be excited
to start this season. Last year the team
qualified for the State playoffs only to
be eliminated in the first round by Days
Creek, the number one seed in the 2A
tournament. This year Williams returns
with a core group of players, several who
have a lot of varsity experience during
the previous two seasons.
Leading the way is senior team
captain Sara McMahon, who has been
named First Team All League in both her
sophomore and junior years. McMahon
has the ability to dominate a game in the
middle both defensively and on offense
and should give opponents trouble again
this season.
On offense, Williams will

VHS Students Paint with Help From True Value
As another school year begins,
Vernonians can be especially proud of
the way their outdoor sports facilities
look, thanks to a bunch of students and a
local business.
Vernonia High School students
worked on a painting project to tidy up
the sports facilities on the old school
grounds. Students painted the ticket
booth and baseball dugouts at the end
of the last school year. The new cheer-
leading squad took on the bleechers this
summer. The paint was paid for through
a grant secured by our local True Value
Hardware Store.

Marley Bower (2nd from left) paint the grand stands. Above left: the ticket booth after students
