The Gun Doctor: Gun-Free Zones
By Wolfgang Rotbart
In the wake of the Aurora, Colo-
rado, movie theater shootings, there has
been a lot of discussion regarding how,
or even if, this tragedy could have been
prevented. This is a proper and reason-
able response to a horrific crime and I
would like to address this topic. I intend
to have a second part to this next month,
as it is a very encompassing discussion.
One of the most often touted
suggestions for reducing mass shootings
and other violent crime is to increase the
number of so-called “Gun-Free Zones”.
I must admit this one is so ludicrous
upon even the most casual examination
of the facts, that it is difficult to maintain
a professional attitude.
Virtually every one of the mass
shootings in the past few years have been
in so-called “Gun-Free Zones.” I prefer
the more accurate term “victim disarma-
ment zones”. There has never been one
documented case of a “gun-free zone”
sign stopping anyone intent on commit-
ting a crime. Never.
Is there anyone who seriously
believes that placing a “Do Not Rob”
sign on every business door would re-
duce robberies? Well, of course not,
but many people seem to accept that a
“gun-free zone” sign would. The only
ones who obey such silly signs are law-
abiding citizens who pose virtually no
threat and are quite often responsible for
aborting violent crimes.
Yes, that’s correct, there are
many documented instances of law-
abiding gun owners who stop these ram-
pages before they start or at least end
them quickly with minimal loss of life.
Even a casual Internet search provides
reams of evidence from reputable news
sources to support this. Somehow, this
never seems to make it into the national
news. As I read on one blog, “A mas-
sacre is a story. Thwarting a massacre
isn’t.”
I doubt that hardly anyone has
heard about the shooting spree by a
student at a law school in Virginia. On
the other hand, I’m sure many remem-
ber the massacre at Virginia Tech a few
years ago. In the first instance, two le-
gally armed students intervened with
the result of 3 killed, 3 wounded; in the
other, the unarmed victims, 32 killed, 17
wounded, just waited their turn to be ex-
ecuted. Virginia Tech was a “gun-free
zone,” the law school was not.
Much more recently, a legally
armed man stopped a knife-wielding
man from carving up even more folks at
a market in Salt Lake City. Luckily for
the victims in this case, the market was

not a “gun-free zone”. And the list goes
on and on.
Do a quick Internet search on
this subject and include “Israel” and
you’ll be truly amazed at how often
those folks successfully deal with mur-
derous attacks. Much of the population
is armed and for good reason. You have
to admit, these folks are serious and ef-
fective when it comes to self-defense.
It has been shown that the vast
majority of these mass shooting maniacs
have two criteria in mind when they plan
their attacks: a crowded, public place
(a “target-rich environment” in military
terms) and the high probability of un-
armed victims. It’s just safer and more
effective to shoot crowds of unarmed
people.
These people may be insane, but
they are most certainly not stupid and of-
ten show meticulous detail in planning
their attacks.
So, what can be done be done to
prevent these mass shootings?
“Gun-free zones” have never
been shown to prevent even one single
attack and seems to actually promote
them. For an amazing number of peo-
ple, the obvious answer to this lack of
effectiveness is “Make more Gun-Free
Zones!”
However, since the “gun-free”

concept has shown itself to be totally in-
effective and worse, I would suggest the
opposite approach. Encourage “Peace-
ful, Law-Abiding Gun Owners Wel-

mined shooting attack if armed, but it’s
almost guaranteed you won’t if you’re
not armed.

Third, we will be clearing out used,
