Wauna Federal Credit Union Displays
Mural to Celebrate Community History
One of the busiest intersections in Astoria,
Oregon, is now home to a beautiful mural depicting
the rich fishing history of the mouth of the Columbia
River. Located directly below the landmark 5-mile
long Astoria-Megler Bridge connecting Oregon and
Washington, the Credit Union’s Astoria Branch –
historical in its own right in a nearly 100 year old
building – proudly displays the new 17x22 foot hand-
painted mural on its roadside wall.
“This mural is our gift to the community and to
the tourists who traverse this beautiful part of the United
States,” says Debi Smiley, Executive Vice President &
Chief Operations Officer for the Credit Union. “It is
a reminder of the importance of the Columbia River
to this area, whether the fishing, the commerce, the
recreation, or the incredible history dating back to the
Lewis and Clark journeys and beyond.”
The idea to add a mural to the building
originated several years ago with a local member of

the Credit Union board of directors, Debbie
Huffman, and the Branch Manager, Jeff
Parker. Local and highly regarded artist
Dorothy Danielson was soon commissioned
to produce an image that would represent
the area’s history. Her inspiration was the
butterfly fishing boats used on the River
during the area’s early years.
The mural was unveiled to a group
of City officials and local dignitaries during
a brief ceremony July 9th. Applause was
immediate and robust once the curtain
was dropped and the mural was available
for all to enjoy. Passing motorists shared
enthusiastic honks of approval during the
rush hour traffic period.

ASIST is a two-day interactive workshop that trains professionals and other community providers
in suicide "first-aid". Participants are trained how to recognize and assess the potential risk of
suicide. This workshop also equips the participant with the intervention skills to keep the person
safe until the appropriate level of ongoing help can be accessed.
World Class Training
ASIST is the most widely used, acclaimed, and researched suicide intervention training in the
world. Over 1500 Oregonians have taken ASIST in recent years. In addition to learning the knowl-
edge and skills of suicide intervention, participants report improved comfort, confidence, and
competence doing interventions. ASIST is not therapy. It is "first-aid" designed to keep a person
safe until they can receive further intervention.
Participants will be able to:
• Recognize attitudes about suicide
• Identify suicide factors and estimate risk
• Intervene with a person at risk to make them safe
• List resources available to a person at risk
• Commit to help coordinate social support for a person at risk
