Living on a Lake in the Country: Water Fun
By Gayle Rich-Boxman
At Fishhawk Lake, a private lake community
located 24 miles past Vernonia off Highway 202
where I live (and do my real
estate) when the weekends
in June start, you see all
kinds of water activity
happening. Kayakers, kids
on paddleboats, people in
canoes or driftboats with
dogs at the helm crop up,
fishing lines dragging
behind. Owning a lakefront
or lake home at Fishhawk
Lake can give you the
luxury of this view through
the whole spring, summer
and even fall season. I’ve
had the pleasure of going out
my door, facing the lake and
shooting some fun photos.
I even got a shot of my
neighbor sailing on a warmish sunny day in November!
Being on the water is exhilarating for kids,
calming for adults. There’s a fella
I sold a lakefront home to a few
years ago who simply bought it to
go rowing as his activity of choice
because his knees
are bad and this form
of exercise suits
him. I have watched
him row by on
quiet mornings and
he looks like he’s
channeling Thoreau
at those times.
Because Fishhawk Lake only allows
electric motors or human-powered
watercraft, there’s a different feeling
around here. There are no wild jetskiers
zipping by you with noisy motors as
you are trying to float along the top of
the water and sun yourself. You get a
chance to let go of your inner noise,
slip into alcoves and watch nature and
allow yourself some sense of peace.
Water is very healing, and those of us who are lucky
enough to be part of this community at Fishhawk Lake
know that the lake is
a big draw for that
very reason.

wilderness getaway

Family Volunteers for Cleanup
Over 100 members of the Juhasz
family were recently visiting Vernonia for a
family reunion and decided they would like to
do some service work for the community. The
family spent the day of June 26 th working at
Hawkins Park and Vernonia Lake weeding and
cleaning up, washing windows at the Scout
Cabin and working at the Pioneer Museum.
