Local Logs Become Part of New School
13
Local cedar logs will be used to decorate
the lobby of the new Vernonia school building.
They will frame a donor wall to highlight the
contributions of many individuals, companies
and foundations that have made the new building
possible.
The logs came from trees grown on the
new school property by former land owners Don
and Delores Webb. The trees have seasoned on
the property since being felled last year and were
expertly processed by hand by local woodworker
Cory Colburn of Fall Creek Woodworking.
Colburn split three thirty foot logs which
will be secured by P&C Construction to the
east wall of the main atrium of the new school,
giving the appearance of a living forest inside the
building and honoring the history and heritage of
this northwest community.

Calling All High
School Students
Any students wishing to lend a hand at the
Vernonia Community Garden have the opportunity to
receive Community Service hours. There are many
aspects to it’s creation, care and harvest. Planting
is underway and daily watering will be necessary as
the weather warms. A large portion of the garden is
being planted to supply Vernonia Cares Food Bank
with fresh produce. There may be an opportunity
to participate in workshops as well and to educate
gardeners that rent plots regarding the care of their
garden. If interested, please call Penny Costley (503)
429-0196 or Pat Stacklie (503) 429-7563.
The first modular classrooms were removed from the
Vernonia school campus on June 20th. High school
and middle school students have attended classes in
the mods since 2008.
