Vernonia PEO Announces Banks Public Library Begins
Fundraiser and Officers Renovation
The Vernonia Chapter of
PEO has named its new officers
for the upcoming fiscal year:
President Coni Hodgson; Vice-
President
Carolyn
Keasey;
Recording Secretary Claudine
East;
Treasurer Tobie Finzel
Chaplain
Katie
Poetter;
Corresponding Secretary Audeen
Wagner; Guard Patty Buchanan;
Historian Nancy Burch.
PEO is a philanthropic
sisterhood established almost
150 years ago, which has grown
into a national and international
organization. Its main goal is to
provide scholarships for women.
Every year one or two scholarships
are awarded to graduating seniors
at Vernonia High School. In
addition, the local chapter supports
PEO educational foundations,
both in Oregon and nationwide. A
growing number of local women
are recipients of scholarships and
low-interest loans to help meet
their educational goals.
To support these efforts,
PEO offers wreaths at the annual
Christmas Bazaar (a very popular
and fragrant part of the Bazaar!).
Other fund-raising activities
continue throughout the year
to provide support for women
students.
Spring
and
summer
bulbs are available now. Anyone
interested in a colorful addition to
the flower garden may find them
for sale at the Made in Vernonia
Store, which is open Tuesday,
Thursday, Friday and Saturday
from 10:00 til 6:00, and Sunday
10-4. For more information about
the bulb sale, call Tobie Finzel at
503-705-2173.
Renovation of the
Banks Public Library began
April 16 after months of
planning.
Construction
should take about six weeks
to complete. The first weeks
of construction will cause
some disruption to normal
library traffic, but the library
will remain open and many
items will be available for
checkout. The library will
close for three weeks on
Monday, May 7 to allow for
the most efficient renovation.
During the closure period,
patrons are encouraged to
have their holds sent to the
next most convenient library.
For many, this will be Forest
Grove.
North Plains and
Hillsboro Main are also good
options. All patron holds with
a pick-up library of Banks
will automatically become
inactive on April 30. Those
holds will reactivate May 30
and items ready to ship will be
available for checkout in early
June when we reopen.
The renovation will
result in an expansion of
the library into the existing
community
room
and
construction of a new lobby.
This expansion will provide
room for our ever-expanding
library collection, additional
seating for patrons to read or
access library Wi-Fi with their
laptops, and increased staff
work space.

re-opening and celebration in

The City of Banks
is providing the funding for
the renovation portion of
this two-phase project. The
second phase, construction of
new space to allow for future
growth of the library and to
reinstate a community room
for public meeting use, will
be financed through various
funding sources, including
grants and donations. The
Friends of the Library and a
group of interested citizens
will spearhead the fundraising
campaign. To prepare for this
effort, the Library Expansion
Team is undergoing training
provided through a grant from
The Ford Family Foundations.
UO and Stamps Foundation Partner on New Scholarships
University matches $1.5 million gift to create new program for exceptional students
More scholars will soon put their
stamps on the University of Oregon.
Thanks to a generous $1.5 million gift
from the Stamps Family Charitable
Foundation, the number of UO students
receiving full-tuition scholarships will
rise by at least 20, and funds will be
available to help the scholars get the
most out of their college experience.
Starting in Fall, 2013, five
incoming students per year will receive
full-tuition scholarships, including room
and board, to attend the UO for four years.
A total of 20 students will be awarded
the merit-based scholarships. Recipients
will also be awarded enrichment funds
to help them pursue study abroad or
other experiences.
The UO will match the
foundation’s gift to establish the
Penelope W. and E. Roe Stamps IV
Leadership Scholar Awards. Students
will be selected based on merit and how
well they exemplify a set of core values,
including leadership, perseverance,
scholarship, service and innovation.
“In recent years, the UO has seen
unprecedented growth and a dramatic
increase in the quality and diversity of
our entering classes,” said UO Interim
President Robert Berdahl. “Thanks to
the Stamps’ generosity, we can ensure
access to the University of Oregon for
the best and brightest
students.”
In addition to covering
tuition, fees, room and
board, the awards are
supplemented
by
an
enrichment fund of $12,000
per
student.
Stamps
Leadership Scholars will
submit proposals to use
this money for activities
such as study abroad
programs, research, unpaid
internships or academic
conferences.
“The enrichment fund
will be an extraordinary
resource,” said Roger

New Work by Banks Artist
Schlegel to be Exhibited
Karin Clarke Gallery in Eugene ,
OR will be presenting an exhibit of new
paintings by Banks, OR artist Robert
Schlegel. The gallery has been pleased
to feature Schlegel’s paintings over the
years and his work has become familiar to
gallery visitors.
This new work continues to mine
Schlegel’s familiar territory: houses,
landscapes, streetscapes. But there is a
change. The pieces are small—7” x 9” or
smaller, and most are acrylic and mixed
media on paper. The palette is muted, as
if the images are seen in winter light. The
work is looser and has a sketchbook feeling,
allowing line to become important and spaces
to remain unpainted.
