Vernonia 4th of July Fireworks in Jeopardy?
With the recent relocation of
Tom Ramsey to Hermiston, the fate of
our traditional 4th of July fireworks show
looked questionable. Tom, our resident
pyrotechnic expert, had for many years
put on one of the best fireworks shows
in Oregon. When his job was eliminated
during last year’s budget cuts at the
school; he applied, and was hired, by
Union Pacific railroad – his dream job!
The only drawback was that the position
would require him to move away from
Vernonia and the many activities that he
was involved in here.
While we miss Tom’s presence
here, and are thankful for his many
years of service in our community, we
are happy to announce that he left us
with another licensed and fully qualified
replacement for the fireworks show. Lt.
Loren Loomis, of the Vernonia Rural
Fire Protection District, has worked
with Tom in putting on the show for
the last few years and has stepped
forward and volunteered to take over the
responsibility. Now we come to the next
hurdle….and this is where YOU come
in.
Tom also raised all the money
to fund the fireworks show. It costs

approximately $5,000 to put on a display
of the same caliber we have enjoyed
for the last few years. This is not a
sponsored event and the city does not set
aside funds for this activity – the money
has come from individual donations by
businesses, residents and organizations
in our area.
In order to have a fireworks
show again this 4th of July, the materials
need to be purchased by the first of
June. This only leaves a small window
of time to raise the funds necessary.
Please consider making a donation
and talk to your friends, civic group,
or organization to see if they would be
willing to designate some funds for this
event. Donations can be dropped off
at the Fire Station (make your checks
payable to VRFPD) and mark clearly on
your check or envelope that the money
is to go toward the fireworks show.
We will also have a drop-off site at the
Pancake Breakfast. Come enjoy a great
breakfast and help out the Volunteer Fire
Association.
