in district in the 400, a new event for

pressive as a freshman in the sprints.
Lea Wilson won the shot put
for the Loggers, setting a new league
record on April 12 with a throw of 38
feet 11 inches. She was 2nd at the Banks
Invitational with a throw of 38 feet 6
inches. “As impressive as that is, I know
she’s not satisfied,” says Brown. “She
threw almost 5 feet further last year and
was 2nd in State at the 5A level. When
she gets it all together, I expect she will
be the state champion.”
Lane Sullivan won the long
jump at the Banks Invitational. “That

was a big win for Lane and should give
him a lot of confidence going into the
critical part of the season,” said Brown.
In the distance events, in addi-
tion to Fleck, Rowan Cheney is tied for
3rd in league in the 3K and has a shot to
qualify for state. For the guys, Brown
says Quin Johansen and Ty Talantov
have been impressive. “I’ve tried them
at several events, they never complain--
they always do well and give 100%.”
“My feeling is that it’s all prac-
tice till District, explains Brown. “It’s
the only meet that really counts because
that is the meet that gets you to State.

Baseball—The Loggers Baseball team
has not had the start to their season they
had hoped for.
Difficulty hitting and poor field-
ing have left coach Aaron Miller’s boys
team with a 2-6 record and trying to find
a way to turn their season around.
“We’ve struggled really hard
fielding the ball and hitting in our first
few games,” says Miller. “This has re-
ally put us in a tough spot in terms of
making league playoffs, let alone state
playoffs. So we’ll see if we are able to
rebound.
Miller has had several key play-
ers out for various reasons or playing
with injuries, including Joe Benes, Aus-
tin Cutright, and Ryan Lawrence. All
but Lawrence have returned to the line-
up and it showed in a game against a
strong Knappa team on April 16, when
the Loggers won 12-2. “We hit the ball
well, we played solid defense and we
had another solid pitching outing from
Tim Jennings,” says Miller. “We looked
like the ball club we have the potential
to be. If we play like that the rest of the
year who knows what can happen.
Miller says even though his
team has lost some games pretty handily
while giving up a lot of runs, his pitching
really hasn’t been the problem. “We’re
not overpowering—we’re not going to
just shut people down, but they have all
been pitching well enough to win.” Bo
Clark, Benes and Cutright have all had
decent outings on the mound.
That being said, Tim Jennings
has been having a great year on the
mound for the Loggers. On April 3, Jen-
nings threw a five inning no-hitter against
Faith Bible, striking out six and giving
up no walks in a 13-0 Loggers win; two
errors kept Jennings from pitching a per-
fect game. In the win against Knappa
Jennings had seven strikeouts, gave up
three walks and scattered six hits.
Having the team healthy and
back at full strength has really effected
both the offense and defense. “Getting
those kids back in the lineup has been
huge, says Miller. “Our batting order
looks really different, and the strength of
our fielding is vastly improved.”
Offensively, Miller noted that
Josh Butcher has had several multiple hit
games. Joe Benes has been doing a good
job getting on base as the lead off hitter,
and after a slow start, Jake Titus has had
several key hits. Bo Clark and Jackson
Miller have driven in the most runs on
the team.
With three games series’ coming
up against last place Neah-Kah-Nie as
well as Nestucca and Portland Christian
the Loggers have a chance to turn things
around and fight their way back into the
playoff race. “I believe we still have a
chance to control our own destiny,” says
Miller. “But we have to play well.”
Softball—The Lady Loggers are also
struggling at the start of their season.
After opening their season with games
against two of their toughest opponents
in their District Coach Randy Shockey’s
girls are 1-4. So far the Loggers have
three losses to Knappa and split two
games with Gaston.
For the Lady Loggers, Shockey
says he’s been pleased with the per-
formance of Riplee Burch and Kelsey
Brown in the outfield. Samantha Wal-
lace and Tori Dallebroux have shared
catching duties and Stephanie Castro is
the pitcher. “Everybody has contributed
in one way or another,” says Shockey.
Shockey is still confident his
team will make the playoffs as the Log-
ger’s remaining games are against some
of the what should be the weaker teams.
“I think we’re improving and the District
playoffs could be very interesting.”
