Vernonia Lions Receive Awards Empty Bowls
On Tuesday, March 6th, the
Vernonia Lions Club gave their first
ever Melvin Jones Fellowship and
Helen Keller Benefactor Awards in
their 65 year history.
The ceremony took place at
the New Hong Kong Restaurant in
Vernonia. President Grant Williams
served as Master of Ceremonies.
The Lions Club District Governor
Sandy Woolverton along with David
Rich from the Oregon Lions Sight
and Hearing Foundation came from
Portland to be presenters.
District Governor Woolverton
awarded the Melvin Jones Fellowship
to Mr. Robert F. “RED” Curl for him
many years of outstanding service to
his community. Mr. Curl joined the

The Helen Keller award
was presented by David Rich to Pat
Styles and was a complete surprise
to her. Her Club and family had
kept the secret from Ms. Styles for
months until the night of the awards
ceremony.
Congratulations to both Lion
Red Curl and Lion Pat Styles.
The Vernonia Lions Club to
like to express their thanks to District
Governor Sandy Woolverton and
Lion David Rich for braving the cold
winter night to come all the way out to
Vernonia and for making the awards
ceremony so special.
Ceramic bowls made by local
high school students were filled with
a simple meal of homemade soups
as part of the annual “Empty Bowls”
event—a fundraiser for the Columbia
Pacific Food Bank. Attendees pay
$10, Choose a bowl, enjoy a delicious
bowl of soup, and get to keep the
bowl they selected. There was
also live music, a silent auction and
homemade dessert to purchase.
The event is organized
each year by the Columbia County
Commission on Children and
Families. Columbia Pacific Food
Bank serves all of Columbia County
including St Helens, Scappoose,
Rainier, Clatskanie and Vernonia,
including the Vernonia Cares Food
Bank.
ShoeString Players Offer Scholarship
The ShoeString Community
Players hass announced a scholarship to
be available to a Columbia County student
pursuing a degree in the theater arts.
For 2012 at least one scholarships
of $650.00 or more will be available for
award. The funds will be sent directly to
the college, university, or conservatory
indicated by the recipient.
The scholarship is funded
by a portion of the proceeds from the
SSCP annual summer musical, other
productions, and by other funds donated
for the specific purpose of the scholarship.

later than May 1, 2012. Late Applications
will not be considered.
Recommendations from people
having specific knowledge of your work
in theater are strongly encouraged. Both
recommendations must be from an adult
and one of them must be a teacher.
Vernonia Community
Reads 2012
Youngsters will be reading and participating
in an activity related to Addie Boswell’s
book, The Rain Stomper. Ms. Boswell will be
at the library Tuesday, April 10 at 3:30 PM to
do an interactive reading, talk about how
the book was made and lead a drawing
activity on character development.
Young adults will be reading The Hunger
Games by Suzanne Collins. Book
discussion Thursday, March 22, 5:30-
7:30 PM. Participnts will have a
chance to win a pair of tickets to
Cornelius or Forest Grove Act V
Theaters. Refreshments will be
provided. Other activities
include art projects and a
“Hunger Drive” with canned food
donations for the Vernonia Cares
Food Bank.
Adults will be reading Craig
Lesley’s books—especially The
Sky Fisherman with Mr. Lesley
reading from and discussing his
writing Saturday, April 14 at 4:00
PM in the library.
Funded by a joint grant from
The Columbia County Cultural Coalition and
The Friends of the Vernonia Library.
Movie tickets donated by Act V Theaters.

Federal Credit Union C.E.O. and President Robert Blumberg, Vernonia Branch Manag-
er Pam Weller and WFCU staff (Allison McLeod, Heidi Burch, Sue Whitton and Brian
Franck). The check was given at a reception on March 6, 2012 as a donation from
WFCU staff and members to help build the new Vernonia K-12 school campus.
