Stepchild performed at the

th
All in Pub on January 28 and have
received rave reviews from most
everyone who was there. In fact, the
audience liked them so much that
night they convinced the band, and
All In owner Ernie Smith, to let the
band stay on stage and play a couple
extra songs at the end of the night.

Lead Guitarist Derek
Doggett says the band really
enjoyed playing at the All In Pub as
well. “Some places and people are
just really fun to play for--and this is
one of those places,” says Doggett.

Stepchild is what you
would call a “classic” Classic Rock
band. They perform a great set
list of cover versions of all your
favorites—from Pink Floyd to Pearl
Jam, Fleetwood Mac to ZZ Top, and
Aerosmith to The Pretenders—with
a whole bunch in between. It’s good
old fashion rock ‘n roll that gets just Derek Doggett and Stepchild will perform live at

397-1521 or 800-696-7795. Conner
noted that the main Command Center in
the event of a major emergency is the
Vernonia Fire Department. Smith ex-
plained that his department only has one
non-volunteer position, himself, which
sometimes limits their ability to respond
in some situations.

City Councilor Kim Tierney,
who sits on the City Emergency Pre-
paredness Committee, discussed the role
of that committee and the projects they
are working on. Tierney noted that this
is a new Committee and does not have a
lot of history to draw information from.
She discussed the re-activation of the
Citizen Emergency Response Team
(CERT) this past September. Tierney re-
iterated that the role of her committee is
to look at ways for the city to strengthen
themselves and their ability to respond
to emergencies. Tierney noted several
gaps that were identified during the re-
cent snow storm, including vulnerable
citizens needing to be better identified
and the city needing to find better ways
to communicate with citizens. Tierney
discussed a new citizen survey that is
being used to better identify those vul-
nerable citizens and also identify other
concerns and possible resources that
citizens can provide. Tierney also men-
tioned a program called “Map Your
Neighborhood” as a way for citizens to
work together.

Columbia County Commission-
er Tony Hyde briefly explained the role
of state and federal agencies and also
reminded citizens that they need to be
able to look to themselves and be self-
sufficient, including having a 72 hour kit
with needed personal supplies.

During a Question and An-
swer period citizens were reminded
that the Columbia Alert Network sys-
tem is available to notify citizens who
have registered in the event of a severe
emergency situation. Citizens can go
to www.columbia911.com and go to
the C.A.N. Registry link to input their
home and cell phone numbers to receive
an automated message that would alert
them to take action.

Vernonia City Administrator
Haack also discussed how the City pro-
vided access for citizens to purchase
fuel for generators during the last power
outage. Haack and Mayor Mitchell both
noted that the City might need to devel-
op a more accessible and standard way
of getting information to citizens about
emergency situations. Mitchell noted
that this will be a task of the Emergency
Preparedness Committee. Haack also
stated that there is now a City of Ver-
nonia Facebook Page that will share in-
formation and that in an emergency the
City of Vernonia will post information
on the City website.
