Boys Basketball—Loggers Defeat
First Place Falcons, Host Home
Playoff Game

It was billed as the final regular
season basketball game in the Vernonia
Logger Dome and lots of fans young and
old turned out to say goodbye. But the
historic old Dome isn’t done yet.

  In an important matchup
between the first place Faith Bible
Falcons and the second place Vernonia
Paul Jiranek
Loggers in the division 2A Northwest
League, the Loggers sent a clear message
that they still intend to be a force in the
playoffs this year with a decisive 55-45
win on February 9.

 The Loggers, who have secured
second place in the league, will now host
a first round playoff game on Thursday
February 16 at the Logger Dome against
either Gaston or Portland Christian.

In a tightly contested game
through the first three quarters, Vernonia
took control in the final eight minutes
in front of a spirited home crowd, with
strong rebounding, clutch free throw
shooting, and key baskets to secure the
win. The Loggers managed the clock,
and their lead, in the final minutes,
playing smart and opportunistic
basketball.

The team was led by Austin
Cutright, who had an outstanding
performance with 21 points and 12
rebounds. Austin Edgar added 11 points
and 8 rebounds, Paul Jiranek made
several key free throws down the stretch
and Craig Weller, who was hampered
with an ankle sprain, still hit several
important 3 pointers and helped run the
Loggers offense.

The Loggers will look to
advance in the league playoffs on
February 16 and earn a trip to the state
playoffs with a trip to the final eight in
Pendleton as the ultimate goal.

Early in the season the Loggers
lost for only the second and third times
in league play, losing to Gaston 52-51 on
January 23, before losing to first place
Faith Bible 51-48 on January 30. Gaston
also defeated Vernonia on December 13.

The Loggers continued their
dominance of the rest of the Northwest
League with decisive victories over
Portland Christian, Delphian, Knappa,
Neah-Kah-Nie, Riverdale and Nestucca.
The Loggers end their regular season
with a 19-4 overall record, a 13-3 league

Logger head coach David
Weller notes that the Loggers have lost
their four games this season by a total
of 11 points, with two of those losses
coming on shots at the final buzzer.
“With a couple of different bounces
we could easily be 21-0 this year,” said
Weller. He is excited that the Loggers
will have a chance to host a home league
playoff game and is also looking at the
possibility that if the Loggers make it
through the league playoffs than they
could potentially host a home state
playoff game. “It’s been a really long
time since that has happened,” says
Weller.

That would be a great way to
close the historic Logger Dome.
Brown, Cierra Henson and sophomore
Stephanie Castro. The season was
highlighted by key wins over Neah-
Kah-Nie and Faith Bible.

On Senior Night, February 9, the
Vernonia crowd said goodbye to a hard
working class of senior ladies. Senior
Robin Elliot had the honor of singing the
National Anthem before the game.
Wrestling—Loggers Head to District
Tourney with Strong Lineup

The
Vernonia
Loggers
are preparing for the 2A District 1
Tournament after some very tough
competitions.
Girls Basketball—Lady Loggers Earn
Playoff Berth and Face Gaston

The Vernonia Lady Loggers
have bounced back from a slow start this
season to earn the fifth seed in the 2A
Northwest League playoffs.

Finishing their season with an
8-8 league record, Vernonia will travel
to face Gaston on Thursday February 16.

After struggling through a tough
preseason schedule the Lady Loggers
have beaten the teams they should
have in a very competitive league and
Sammy Morgan
the earned the right to advance into the
postseason.

Logger head coach Chris Wolf
is very excited about this team and has
high expectations for the upcoming
District Tournament on February 17-18.

“As a group this is the best team
I’ve ever coached,” says Wolf.

The Loggers will have numerous
top seeds at the District and Wolf
believes as many as 7 or maybe more of
his wrestlers could qualify for the State
Tournament in Portland on February 24-
25. The top two wrestlers in each weight
class at the District Meet qualify for the
State Tournament.

The Loggers will send a strong
and experienced middle line-up to the
mat with seniors Ty Talantov at 126,
Shylo Dooley at 132, Quin Johansen
and Dillon Dethlefs at 145, Joe Benes
at 152, Jake Barnes at 160, Kristian
Kim Allen
Wrendstroem at 170, Jake Stevens at 182

The Loggers were led this and Brett Benes at 195. Junior Dawson
season by seniors Shyla Tungwenuk and Shay adds depth at 170 and freshman
Kim Allen along with juniors Samantha Damian Young has impressed at 126.
