On the Shelves: What’s
Happening at the Vernonia Library
Vernonia Public Library has
received a $1,000 grant to improve
public library services to children. The
Ready to Read Grant funds will be
used for supplies, incentives and paid
performances for Summer Reading 2012.
The Ready to Read Grant was
established by the State Legislature in
1993 to assist local libraries in helping
to achieve the Oregon Benchmarks for
childhood learning and development.
This annual grant, funded by the
General Fund of the State of Oregon,
is administered by the State Library.
Oregon libraries may use these funds for
the statewide summer reading program
for children ages 0-14 and early literacy
services for children ages 0-5.
The impact of the Ready to Read
Grant program is measured annually by
the percentage of libraries adopting “best
practices” in their services to children.
The State Library has identified three
best practices in youth services at public
libraries: summer reading programs,
training for parents and childcare
providers in research-based early literacy
curriculums, and outreach to children
and teens who face barriers getting to
the library. Vernonia’s library provides
an entertaining, educational reading
program each summer for youngsters of
the community. This grant helps make
this program possible.

The City of Vernonia and the
Vernonia School District are coordinating
the development of the Bridge Street
Improvement Project that is unfolding in
conjunction with the new construction
of the K-12 school campus on Missouri
Avenue . In December 2010, then Governor
Ted Kulongoski made an announcement
at the site of the new school that Oregon
Department of Transportation had found
grant resources to allow an award of $3.8
million toward road improvements on
Bridge Street between Texas Avenue and
Spencer Avenue and along the length of
Missouri Avenue to the then proposed new
school campus.
Over the next few months, in
advance of the road improvements, two
projects will unfold: (1) a tree removal
project and (2) a hydrant relocation project.
ODOT is in the process of putting out a
small contract for tree removal. In advance
of that project, they will mark all of the
trees to be cut. “I know in advance that
this change will cause some chagrin, and
I am hopeful that we can find a way to
accept this modification in the landscape
as a sign of progress,” says Vernonia City
Administrator Bill Haack.
The required movement of the
fire hydrant is specifically to allow for the
realignment of Bridge Street. However
the City also intended to realign it to allow
for the eventual modification of Lakeview
Terrace to line up with Missouri to make a
true intersection. “This future modification
will also allow for better access for the
Vernonia Rural Fire Protection District
trucks to enter their fire station off of
Lakeview in the future,” says Haack.
