Readers Lend Their Voices...
On Wednesday afternoon, December 14, as
I was leaving my home to go to the homework club at
Washington Grade School I fell directly on my left knee
replacement. I could not move due to the pain. When I
didn’t show up at school, David asked Eldonna to check
on me and she found me and called 911. I would like
to thank Dean Smith for overseeing the situation, Kara
Kemper for keeping me calm, Spencer Oliver for his
expert first aid, Randy Carlton and Tom Moss for their
safe driving and Dan Hanson.
The team’s action and united teamwork had me
on the way to the hospital in only a few minutes.
I remember one of the e.r. doctors crediting
Spencer for the way he loaded me into the ambulance.
Because of the severity of the break, moving the leg into
another position could have severed an artery.
Although the crisis phase is over, the femur bone
was broken in half and was screwed to a plate that was
attached to the knee replacement. There will be no weight
bearing on this leg for three months (one down, two to
go!). A side complication required a second surgery, i.v.
antibiotics for four weeks and I am back in the rehab
facility for an undetermined period of time.
These days and weeks since my fall, my
wonderful, devoted husband David has been at my side. I
have the utmost gratitude for his devotion. I don’t know
where I’d be without it. Both of us were, and are still,
amazed at the Vernonia caring spirit that came out from
everywhere to help us. The notes, letters, cards, flowers,
well wishes and visits were uplifting to us. You all know
who you are- Betty, Aaron and Betsy, Eldonna and Grant,
Lisa, Ralph, Judy, Tamorah and Gienah, Carol, Ronda,
Jana, Roxanna, Glenda, Kelley, Linda, Lynn, Janelle,
VCC church, Marty, Mark, St. Mary’s and the WGS and
VMS students. Janean and family has given wonderful
care to Teddy Bear at a moment’s notice. Sharon and
company kept David in Vernonia at my request for
fellowship, food and games to cheer him up and loosen
his stress on Christmas Eve day and evening. There have
been anonymous gifts for expenses and gas and for this
we thank you so much. Sharron, Rietta, Lorna, Brooke,
Leslie and Peter, Lila, Kinnell, Kellie and Sharon provided
meals and ran errands, cleaned the house, took down all
the Christmas decorations and cared for the dog, so that

Why not pay off your mortgage before
he heads off to college?
David did not have to worry about shopping, cooking or
cleaning and could focus more time on the most important
needs.
David and I are amazed at how much this town
did and cared for us. We are touched and humbled by your
kindness and caring. Thank you all so much and I pray
that God will bless you immensely. If there is anyone that
I forgot I pray that God will give you a double blessing.
Sonia Spackman and David too.
