Church News and Events
By William Wells
A Snow-day for Church! Just in case
you didn’t notice, we nearly had enough
snow on January 15 th to shut the city
down. That happened later in the week.
But not quite on Sunday, judging from all
the kids, (and a few adults), that were out
playing in the slippery conditions. As I
went around collecting church bulletins,
I found most churches where open and
they had a few people in attendance. But
since the roads where pretty slippery and
the footing was precarious, naturally
some people didn’t make it to church.
Since the last issue of
Vernonia’s Voice, I have received
several compliments and only one
complaint. Well maybe it was more of
an observation. They wanted to know
why there wasn’t anything in the paper
about Saint Mary’s. Well frankly, I want
to know the same thing about all the
churches.
This is a great opportunity to take
advantage of an evangelistic arm that has
been handed to them on a silver platter. I
have gone from church to church, called
phone numbers, left messages and so on.
Vernonia’s Voice is
published twice
each month on the
2nd and 4th
Tuesday. Look for
our next issue
February 14th.

All I can do is write the information that
is shared with me. But let’s be fair. How
long has Vernonia’s Voice been running
this column? Let me see… oh yeah,
once. So I’ll cut the churches some slack
and give you church goers some time to
get the word out. Talk to your pastor or
priest. Talk to the bulletin secretary and
communication director too. Tell them to
email me, (or call), and share with me
what is going on at church.
I have been going to church for
a long, long time and my wife and I have
held many voluntary positions. If I have
learned anything at all, it is that churches
don’t get in a hurry for anything short
of an emergency. Churches are run by
members who volunteer their time. Like
most people they have a lot of other
responsibilities already. I know that
they don’t want another task added to
their already busy schedules. But think
about it! The benefits to the church and
evangelistic outreach will be well worth
the effort.
I have some sad news. My
brothers and sister have asked my wife
and me to move in with mom and dad
so that they have some live-in help.
Why us? Because they have roots and
ours have been ripped up by the big bad
economy. Not only are we jobless, but
technically we are homeless too. If it
weren’t for benevolence, we wouldn’t
even have a roof over our heads. The
bottom-line, we are giving the request
prayerful consideration.
The thought of leaving saddens
us. We have just started to get involved
in so many voluntary projects here
in Vernonia like writing the ‘Church
News and Events’ column for the Voice,
creating the VernoniaChristianNews.
com website, joining the Walk and
Talk Ministry, and more. So it is my
hope and prayer that there are one or
two people here in Vernonia that will
step-up to keep this column going
and the VernoniaChristianNews.com
website online as well. The Walk and
Talk Ministry will need someone to
take my place there too. Hopefully and
prayerfully these good works will be
continued.
At this point, a tentative decision has been
made and we are making plans to leave
around February 8th. That will give me
time to work with anyone that would like
to volunteer to write for Church News
and Events column for the Voice and
take over the VernoniaChristianNews.
