Church News and Events
By William Wells
Recently Scott Laird and
I sat down and kicked around an
idea for covering church news and
events beyond the typical Church
Directory found in most small
town papers. Neither one of us
know what you would like to see
in this new column, but we think
we have a good idea. So feel free
to correct us if we are wrong. I
conducted an informal survey of
the general public and have found
that the majority where in favor of
this new column.
First Baptist Church is in
the process of changing their name
to Covenant Church of Vernonia.
If you are interested in hearing
Pastor John Murray’s sermons,
they are online at http://sermon.
net/covenantchurchvernonia.
They also have items from a
church rummage sale that they
would like to give away to those
in need. There are a lot of baby
clothes and other baby items,
appliances, clothing for all ages,
and more. For more information,
please contact John Murray at
503-860-3860.
Nehalem Valley Bible
Church performed a Baby
Dedication on Sunday, January 1 st ,
for 7 week old Jiayi Cox. Damien
and Rhea Cox presented Jiayi to
Pastor Taylor and grandparents,
Gunny and Gail Cox, stood
with them. Also at NVBC the
Sunday Evening Bible Study has
resumed. Two items I wish to
highlight: One is that the ladies
have a Wednesday morning Bible
Study at 10:00 AM and the men
have a Men’s Prayer Meeting on
Saturdays at 6:30 AM.
Pioneer
Baptist
Fellowship has two new
classes starting at the Vernonia
Community Learning Center for
Thursday nights. At 5:30 PM
“Survivor Kit for New Christians”
taught by John Cahill; at 6:30 PM
Prayer Meeting Starts; and then
at 7:00 PM “The Baptist Faith
and Message” taught by Jack
Lindsley. One class that is not at
the VCLC will be taught at 1181
Cherry Street by Lynda Cahill,
“Jesus, the One and Only,” written
by Beth Moore. This class will
start at 7:00 PM
Walk and Talk Prayer
Team takes to the streets of
Vernonia every Tuesday and
Thursday to gather prayer
requests. Don’t be afraid of
something being too personal, just
tell them, “Keep It Private” and
they will. For more prayer power,
tell them to share your request with
the Prayer Chain and you’ll have
a whole bunch of people praying
for you. Prayer is more powerful
than a stick of dynamite. Kaboom!
Things happen! After the prayer
team finishes their walk and talk,
they then come together as a group
and pray over your requests.
VernoniaChristainNews.com
is a brand new Christian news
blog that has just been published
online. Not only am I writing
for Vernonia’s Voice, but I am
also writing and publishing the
Christian news blog. Using multi-
medias will give us more options
and less constraints for gathering
and distributing information. If
you wish to participate, Vernonia
Christian News accepts press
releases,
articles,
calendar
submissions and news items that
are of interest to the Christian
community.
Question: Would you
like to see the Vernonia Christian
Academy open their doors again
and start excepting students for
a Christian education? To answer
this question, go online to www.

Casting Call for New VCT Play
Attention all actors, actresses and fans
of the theater! Your last chance to appear in a
play on the Washington Grade School stage is
coming soon!
Vernonia Community Theater is
pleased to announce that it will be holding
auditions on two nights: Tuesday, January 24,
and Wednesday, January 25, both at 7 pm in
the Washington Grade School gym for its next
play: Vaudeville’s My Home. Adults and
youth aged 13 and up are welcome to try out for
one of 20 adult and youth parts; there are one
to two parts for actors under 13. Callbacks, if
needed, will be held at WGS Tuesday, January
31, at 7 pm. If you’d rather help behind the
scenes with directing, stage management, sets,
lighting, props, or costumes, please come on
the either the 24th or 25th to let us know about
your skills and interest in helping.
The play, written by Ken Bradbury,
is a semi-musical comedy set in the 1920s. It
starts out with two vaudeville troupers who are
fleeing New York following their robbery of a
theater box office. They become stranded in
a rural village that needs a new school (does
this sound familiar?). Broke and hungry, the
men devise a plan to swindle the local
populace by convincing them they have
enough talent to produce their own
vaudeville show to raise money for that
