Readers Lend Their Voices...
To the Editor
I would like to express my
thanks to everyone who helped
during the last few years with the
construction of my new home. So
many people from Vernonia and
from outside this community made
donations, volunteered their time and
labor, offered encouragement and
helped make this dream a reality for
me. I planned to name every person
who has assisted with this project, but
the list is just too long!
I was recently able to move
into my new house, which was
specially designed to accommodate
my needs. It is great to finally be
here. I couldn’t have done it without
the help of everyone who gave so
generously to help me in my time of
need. Thank you to all of you!

Free Art Program
Allows youth to experience the world
The St. Helens Arts and Cultural
Commission is offering a series of programs
called “Free Art and Craft Workshops” to
youth. This will be a series of four workshops,
one per month, from January to April 2012.
The first workshop, “Art Quilting”, for
children 8 years and older, will be taught by
master quilters and artists from the Columbia
River Piecemakers Quilt Guild. It will be
on Saturday, January 14 from 10:00 AM to
12:30 PM at the Columbia Learning Center’s
auditorium, 375 S.18th Street, St. Helens .
The class will be a hands-on workshop
limited to 15 attendees so that everyone can
get ample guidance. The workshop is free of
charge. Pre-registration is required; call the St.
Helens Public Library at 503-397-4544, ext.
100 to register.
The following workshops will be
“Leather Carving” in February, “Eastern
European Egg Painting” in March, and “Basket
Weaving” in April.
The goals of the “Free Art and Craft
Workshops” program are to provide access
to arts and culture and to foster knowledge of
cultural heritage to the youth in our community.
The program is sponsored by the St. Helens
Arts and Cultural Commission through a grant
from the Columbia County Cultural Coalition.
More information regarding the
workshops can be found on the City of St.
Helens website under the Essential Resident
Resources column at www.ci.st-helens.or.us.
