The Spirit of Christmas in Vernonia
The Vernonia community
gathered together to kick off the
holiday season on December 3
with the second annual “Spirit of
Christmas in Vernonia” celebration.
There was lots of shopping at local
retail stores and several bazaars and
special holiday shows. There was
also storytelling at the Library, a live
nativity scene courtesy of St. Mary’s
Church, and the Vernonia Dickens
Carolers wandered the streets all day
and into the evening. Santa arrived
in town as part of the Lighted Truck
Parade and then helped with the
ceremonial town tree lighting before
meeting with local children. The
evening ended with a family friendly
Snowball Dance and Hot Cocoa
Social at the Vernonia Grange Hall.

As part of the “Spirit of Christmas
in Vernoniad celebration, the Vernonia Dickens
Carolers presented this song about life in
Vernonia, sung to the tune of the Christmas Carol
Ding Dong Merrily on High, with lyrics written by
Vernonian, David Spackman.
“ I was trying to capture several features
of life in Vernonia that make it special to me:
the generosity and kindness of the people, the
spirit of celebration, the slow-paced life,d says
Spackman. “I really believe in the people, the town
and the future for Vernonia.d

We’re all from Vernonia it’s true
A village quaint and charming.
With loggers, hippies and a few
in commerce and in farming.
Vernoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooonia
Mapquest us and come find us!
Rushing here is out of place,
We’re on a first name basis.
We take time to know a friendly face,
That’s just the way this place is.
Vernoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooonia
Life’s slow here but we like it.
Festivals for salmon, friends and quilts
Parades for all occasions
When we celebrate we do it to the hilt,
We’re all of that persuasion.

Vernonia’s a place we like to be
With people kind and giving.
