Vernonia Band Marches in Macy’s Parade
For the fourth year in a row the
Vernonia Marching Band participated in
the Macy’s Holiday Parade in downtown
Portland the day after Thanksgiving. This
year the band was sponsored by Wells
Fargo Bank! Macy’s and Wells Fargo
provided a banner, which misspelled
Vernonia, but that just gave the chaperones
an opportunity to explain to onlookers
where the Band comes from.
The Vernonia Band uniforms
still have BHS on the collar instead of
VHS—the uniforms were purchased
with donated funds after the flood and
the school and band have not had the
resources to replace them. The kids do not
seem to mind, they enjoy the parade and
look forward each year to lunch at Izzy’s
buffet afterward.
Who else but teenagers would be
hungry the day after Thanksgiving!
Congratulation to the Vernonia
Band for being invited to play in the
Macy’s Parade and for continuing to
be true representatives of the spirit of
Vernonia!

second place finishes at the district meet. Johansen,
Stevens and Barnes all finished third at district. Benes
ended up placing fourth at state.
As a team the Loggers finished second at the
district last year, just two disappointing points behind
Central Linn. This year the Loggers are on a mission—
win that district title.
At the Harrisburg Eagle Classic the Loggers fin-
ished first with 168 points; ahead of Harrisburg—152,
Jefferson 145, and district rival Central Linn—144.5.
Twelve Loggers placed in the Tournament included in-
dividual champions Dillion Dethlefs at 152, Joe Benes
at 170, Jacob Stevens at 182; Jake Barnes who took
second at 170, third place finishers Shylo Dooley at
138, Quin Johansen at 145 and Dawson Shay at 195
and fifth place finishers Ty Talantov at 126, Damian
Young at 138, Amir Habibuloev at 160 and Kristian
Wredstroem at 182; and Matthew Bringman took sixth
at 106.
On December 7 the Loggers faced
some tough competition at the Banks In-
vitational, wrestling against several 4A
schools programs. The Loggers got some
good experience while finishing fifth out of
six teams. The Loggers were head to the
Colton Invitaitonal on Saturday December
10 where they again expected to see some
tough matches.
“I like to get my wrestlers as many
tough matches as I can during the season,
that way they’re ready when it’s time for the
Districts,” says head coach Wolf.
The Loggers have three home meets

against Knappa and Warrenton; January 17 against
Clatskanie and another team yet to be determined, and
January 26 against Knappa and league rival Nestucca.
The Loggers will compete in several tournaments in-
cluding Nestucca on December 17, Clatskanie on
December 28, the Bob Bishop Invitational on January
7, the Oregon Classic on January 13-14 and the presti-
gious Pac Rim Tournament in Seaside on January 20-
21. On February 8 the Loggers will travel to Central
Linn as a tuneup for their ultimate goal—the District 1
Tournament on February 17-18 and finally the 2A State
Tournament on February 24-25.
Girls Basketball—New head coach Victor Matoush
has a talented varsity squad, with depth and some
height. The Lady Loggers graduated several regulars
after last season, so this year’s squad starts the sea-
son with limited varsity game experience. The team
is learning a new system, and Coach Matoush and his
players are adjusting to each other and their personal
styles. The Loggers have a difficult non-league sched-
ule, so the early part of the season is looking like it will
be a learning experience. The Lady Loggers headed
into league play 0-4.
Matoush has previous girls basketball coach-
ing experience at St. Mary’s High School in Medford
and North Medford High School.
