Waste Management
Provides Inclement
Weather Strategy
This is the time
of year where inclement
weather could potentially
impact our route operations
and transfer stations for
Waste Management. Severe
weather can create un-
manageable risk and Waste
Management does not want
to take chances with their
employees or the public at
large when un-safe conditions
exist. It is the goal of Waste
Management to provide the
best possible service to their
communities.
If
Waste
Management is unable to
service their customers due
to weather, their strategy is
as follows:
Hauling Operations
Make Up Days- In the event
that that there is only one
day to make up, service will
be pushed back one day.
Example: If your regular
service day is on Thursday
but was missed due to
inclement weather, service
will be provided Friday and
regular Friday customers will
be serviced on Saturday.
Lost Days- In the event that
two or more days are lost

due to inclement weather,
additional vehicles and
teams will be assigned to
service commercial accounts
whenever possible. All
residential accounts will
be serviced on their next
scheduled pick up day. Extra
cans/bags placed at the curb
will be picked up at no charge
(up to their level of service)
due to the missed days of
service.
Credits-
Credits
will
be issued to accounts as
requested due to non-service.
In the event that a customer
cannot wait and they can
bring their refuse/recycling to
either the Columbia County
Transfer Station or the
Vernonia Transfer Station,
the customer will be allowed
to dispose of their refuse/
recycling at no charge (up to
their level of service) with a
current account number.

Operation-
Hours of operation will be
determined depending on
severity of weather events.
The City of Vernonia is
seeking any community mem-
ber who has received Commu-
nity Emergency Response Team
(CERT) training. About 100
individuals have taken the forty
hour training since CERT began
in Vernonia; unfortunately the
City does not have a current list
of all active CERT members.
If you have taken the
CERT training please call City
Hall at 503-429-5291 and let
them know if would still like to
be an active member of the Ver-
nonia CERT.
Vernonia Interim Police
Chief Mike Conner is currently
organizing the Vernonia Emer-
gency Management Committee
and is planning to sponsor CERT
courses this winter for new mem-
bers. In addition, the Commit-
tee hopes to offer some refresher
courses for existing CERT mem-
bers.
CERT volunteers are
trained to assist their community
in emergency situations under the
direction of emergency respond-
ers and expand the community’s
ability to respond.
Vernonia’s
Commu-
nity Emergency Response Team
should not be confused with an-
other group of individuals calling
themselves the “Citizens Emer-
gency Response Team.” This
group is NOT officially spon-
sored by the City of Vernonia.

Time For Toy and Joy Holiday Giving
The holiday season is already upon us and the
Vernonia Volunteer Fire and Rescue Association is once
again planning to assist the families of the Vernonia
community.
“Toy and Joy” is an annual project the Vernonia
Fire Volunteers take on every year to help make the
holidays just a little brighter. Each year the volunteers
gather donations, purchase gifts, wrap them and then
assist Santa in delivering them to children just before
Christmas.
Donation barrels have already been placed around
town at Wauna FCU, Vernonia Hardware, Vernonia City
Hall, Clever Cricket, Sentry Market and Black Bear.
Any families that would like to be included in the
Toy and Joy program are required to fill out an application
and return it by December 19. The program is for children
twelve and under. Applications are available where the
barrels are located, and also at Vernonia Cares, Head Start
and the Vernonia Fire Station. Applications will also be
sent home with all students at Washington Grade School.
Applications can be returned to the mailbox for Santa in
front of the Fire Station on Bridge Street.

the VPC. “We have a large population of
students who are “couch surfing”--staying in
several different homes and moving around.
One of the reasons the VPC has gotten
involved is because if children and adults are
given a little more dignity they are less likely
to do self-harm. If a child is able to come
to school and have a clean toothbrush, they
are more likely to stay in school and not be
embarrassed.”
Both Larke and Pearl say they have
had customers and community members
already asking about when the Giving Tree
will be started this year-- a good sign that
Vernonia is ready, through the Kiwanis
Community Closet and the Giving Tree, to
give meaningful support to their community
this holiday season.

cheons scheduled for November and
December.
Connie’s Fabulous Breakfasts: Fab-
ulous breakfasts are available to the
public on Fridays for a cost of only
$3.50. The event happens at the Senior
Center (446 Bridge Street) from 7:30
to 9:00 AM each Friday. Meal price in-
cludes a beverage, too. Enter through
the side, parking lot door. What a deal!
Week Day Lunches: The Vernonia
Senior Center offers nutritious and
tasty lunches each weekday for a $4
donation for seniors over 60; cost is $5
for anyone under 60. To-go meals are
available for $5. These are available
to the public, not just Senior Citizens.
(Mealtime is noon; late arrivals may
not be served.) You can reserve your
lunch by calling by 11:15 AM, or fur-
ther in advance if possible, to assist the
cooks as they prepare the day’s meals.
Meals on Wheels are available for a $4
donations for seniors over 60. Please
contact the Senior Center for an appli-
cation.
Maple Bars available locally! Con-
nie King, the cook at the Senior Cen-
ter, is making maple bars each day. The
maple bars are available to the public,
too, and only cost $1 each. Availabil-
ity is subject to quantity on hand. You
can assure yourself of a good supply
by pre-ordering them directly from
Connie by calling the Senior Center
(503-429-3912) any week day, from
7:00 AM-3:00 PM. Please allow one
day lead time for larger orders. The
Center’s front door opens at 9:00, but
the side parking lot door opens at 7:00.
Ah, sweet treats!
Thrift Store: Bargain prices can be
found in Vernonia’s Senior Center in
their Thrift Store. The retail store is
open Monday through Friday, from
9:00 AM until 3:00 PM. The Thrift
Store provides funds for the Senior
Center’s facility and its many activi-
ties. Donations can also be dropped off
during those same hours, and donated
clothes need to be clean and in good
condition so they are “sales ready”.
We are offering half off during the first
week of each month. Buy locally and
support your local Senior Center.

Special Days: On the last Wednesday
of the month Wauna Credit Union will
be serving ice cream. On the last Fri-
day of the month we will serve birth-
day cake and ice cream to celebrate
that month’s birthdays.
Membership Dues: Another way to
support Vernonia’s Senior Center is to
pay the $15 annual membership dues.
Checks may be mailed or dropped off
at the Senior Center. Anyone 50 and
older may join.
