2011 Summer Canning Class Schedule
Have you thought about learning to can
fruits, vegetables, jams, jellies or fish or game
this summer? Are you an experienced canner
who would like an update on the latest USDA
recommendations? Then plan to attend one or more
of the canning classes offered by the Columbia
County Extension Service. Classes will be held
at the First Lutheran Church, 360 Wyeth St., St.
Helens (on the corner of N. 4th St. and Wyeth
St.). Each class will cost $20.00 or $70.00 for all
four. A small number of scholarships are available.
Payment must be made in advance to hold your
spot. Class size is limited. All classes are held on
Tuesday’s form 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM.

Women’s Resource Center Activities
Please Join the Columbia County Women’s
Resource Center for their Partner and Supporter
Celebration on Thursday September 1, 2011 from
11:00 AM to 2:00 PM at the Shelter and office
location. For safety, please RSVP for the location.
There will be BBQ Lunch at 11:30 followed by a
brief informational program at 12:30. Come see
our home and learn about our services.
The Resource Center is coming up on our
annual building maintenance. During this time we
work to ensure that the building will be here and
in good shape for many years to come. There are
many volunteer opportunities during the weeks of
August 22 and 29. All are invited to join us for an
open house on Thursday September 1st.

Vernonia Open Air Market
Vernonia Open Air Market is a combination
of local farm products, crafts, food and more held
every Saturday June through October 1st from 10
AM - 2 PM, downtown Vernonia.
First Fridays in September
The final First Friday celebrations of
the season will be held on September 2nd
and September 30 th at the Scout Cabin in
Hawkins Park from 5:00 to 8:00 .
On September 2 nd join your neighbors and
friends in celebrating arts, entertainment, and culture
in our community. You can browse through the work
of local artists and crafters, and enter your name in
a number of exciting raffles including paintings of
historic Vernonia as interpreted through the Artist’s

Vernonia Night Out, August 24, 4:30 PM—at Anderson
Park. Come join friends and neighbors in support of local
public safety agencies.
Red Cross Blood Drive, August 30, 1:30-6:30 PM—at the
Vernonia Community Church, 957 State Street. To make an
appointment call 503-528-5603.
Community Town Hall, September 13, 7-9 PM-- at the
Vernonia School Cafeteria. Discussions to include new
school project update, ODOT street improvements, old school
demolition and new Spencer Park construction.
St. Mary’s Annual Quilt and Craft Fair, September 15-
18—Admission still only $1!, Lunch served daily at 11AM.
At St. Mary’s Church, 960 Missouri Ave. Follow the signs.
Vernonia’s Community Garage Sale, September 17, 9 AM-5
PM—Approximately 40 locations to shop! All residents and
businesses who wish to be included on maps—contact Helen
Bateman at 503-429- 6203. Maps available Thursday before
the sale.
Eye, a quilt donated by the Senior
Center, a Dave Anderson collage,
a Nintendo Game Cube, and a
Pampered Chef turkey roasting pan (drawings will be
September 30th). In celebration of textile arts, kids
can make and decorate sock puppets. Salmon blanks
will also be available for sale.
First Friday is a revenue generating entity for
Vernonia Hands-on Art and is dedicated to celebrating
the arts, bringing people together to meet neighbors,
exchange information and share skills, and reinforcing
a sense of community. And, most importantly, to
HAVE A GOOD TIME!
The last First Friday of the season will be
the last Friday of September in order to coordinate
with Vernonia’s Salmon Festival. Celebrate a great
summer with neighbors and friends by enjoying arts,
entertainment, and culture. Visit with local artists and
crafters, and enter your name in several sensational
raffles that will be drawn before the end of the evening.
Children can fish for Salmon (treats) in a fishing game
and decorate cookies.
Stop by to kick off the Salmon Festival
weekend and close the season with an evening out with
family, friends and neighbors.

To the Editor
First Friday in August brought
crafters, artists and visitors to the Scout
Cabin for an evening of shopping,
visiting neighbors and enjoying the
guitar and vocals of Lowell Mitchell.
Kids decorated magic wands, smashed
a piñata and frosted cookies. Thank you
to the many vendors and visitors that
participated, and to the volunteers that
made the evening run like clockwork.
Special thanks to Jack Finzel for the
mini-engine demonstration and to
artists Diane Coughlin, Sally Harrison,
Walter Neuman, and Dave Anderson
for their paintings of historic “Vernonia
