In Memory of...
Betty Jean Spackman
May 8, 1927 – August 15, 2011
Betty was born in Los Angeles
California to Eva and James Musgrove
and passed away peacefully under
excellent care in the Christurean’s home
with Providence Elderplace.
Betty was the office manager for
L and H Lumber company in Sutherlin
Oregon where she succumbed to the
charms of Jim Spackman, who often
came in on business and they were
married May 8th, 1954. They began
their journey in Sutherlin Oregon. Betty
and Jim built a unique 4000 square foot
home together on 121 acres near the
North Umpqua River in Roseburg.
The most important part of her
life was family. She worked, raised a
family and took care of her mother in
her home until her mother passed away.
Betty was purposeful in providing for
her children the things she did not have
when she was growing up. She planned
and worked to keep get-togethers
celebrations and vacations a family
affair. She invested in many beach stays,
trips to Hawaii, Disneyworld and resort
settings for the family to relax and enjoy
each other’s company.
Bookkeeping and tax consulting
was a perfect career choice for Betty
because she enjoyed helping company’s
and individual’s get their records and
taxes in order. Betty was a partner in
Betty & Ruth’s bookkeeping service in
Sutherlin Oregon for over 30 years. She
was working as a tax consultant until
2008.
Betty’s favorite things in
life besides work and vacations was
anything orange, she had an orange
bedroom, kitchen, clothes, and jewelry.
She loved reading, and especially loved
being around family and eating out.

She is preceded in death by
a brother, Robert Musgrove, and
her parents. She is survived by her
husband James and four children in
Oregon, Teresa Brown, Springfield, Bob
Spackman, Alfalfa, David Spackman,
Vernonia, Jeff Spackman, Portland, 9
grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.
Betty was special, she will be
remembered for her kindness. She was
generous to her children, grandchildren,
friends and many charities. She always
tried to do her best. She will remain in
our hearts now and forever.
A memorial service will be held
at Providence Elderplace at 17727 E.
Burnside Street, Gresham, Oregon on
Tuesday, August 30th at 2:30 PM
LUCILLE E. HICKMAN
McMinnville community, where she
lived for nine years. In 1999, she
moved to Alterra Wynwood Retirement
Community in Forest Grove, where she
was a guest resident for nine years. In
2008, Lucille moved to Clare Bridge
of Beaverton Retirement Community,
where she lived for two years, until
February of 2011, when she moved to
the Kindred Adult Foster Care Home in
Hillsboro, where she had resided since.
Lucille was a homemaker.
While living in the Vernonia
community, she was an active member
of the First Christian Church, which the
Church’s Bell Tower was re-constructed
in the Memory of Charley. Lucille was
also a member of the Pythian Sisters
Lodge and the Rebekah Lodge.
Among her special interests she
enjoyed sewing, handwork, quilting and
gardening.
Lucille was preceded
in death by her parents, Fred and Amy
Hickman, her five brothers and sisters,
Lyle (who died as a child), Vera, Orville,
Omar and Wanda.
Survivors include her two
daughters and a son-in-law, Patricia
Spohn, of Cool, California and
Priscilla and Ted Grice, of Portland,
Oregon and her two sons and daughters-
in-law, Larry and Marilyn Hickman, of
Yamhill, Oregon; and Curtis and Connie
Hickman, of The Dalles, Oregon.
Also surviving are nine
grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren
and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family suggests that
remembrances may be contributions
to the Hospice and Palliative Care of
Washington County, 900 S.E. Oak
Street, #202, Hillsboro, Oregon 97123,
in her memory.

Lucille E. Hickman, 94, a former
resident of Vernonia and McMinnville,
late of Hillsboro, died Tuesday evening,
August 9, 2011 at the Kindred Adult
Foster Care Home in Hillsboro, Oregon.
Graveside Services were held
on Friday, August 12, 2011 at 1:00 PM at
the Vernonia Memorial Cemetery, 2080
Bridge Street in Vernonia, with Pastor
Sam Hough, of the First Christian Church
in Vernonia, officiating. Concluding
Rites and Interment followed at the
Cemetery.
LUCILLE EVA HICKMAN
was born December 7, 1916 in Custer
County, Nebraska, the daughter of the EARSEL V. “ERNIE”
late Fred Curtis Hickman and Amy CHRISTENSEN
Mehetibel (Burnett) Hickman. She was
raised on the family farm and received
her education in Broken Bow, Nebraska.
She was united in marriage
to Charley Lawrence Hickman on
September 14, 1935 in Mullen, Nebraska.
Following their marriage they lived in
Nebraska for 2 ½ years, before moving
to Corvallis, Oregon, where they resided
for ten years. In 1947, they moved to the
Vernonia community, where she lived
for forty-three years.
Lucille was preceded in death
by her husband, Charley, on July 18,
1984 in Hillsboro, Oregon,
after celebrating over forty-eight years
of marriage together.

EARSEL VENVIL “ERNIE”
CHRISTENSEN was born April
22, 1921 in Vernonia, Oregon, a 5 th
generation Vernonian, the son of the
late Vester Christensen and Helen
(Anderson) Christensen. He grew up
on the family farm, near Vernonia and
attended Lincoln and Pleasant Hill
Elementary Schools and Vernonia High
School, having been a graduate of the
Class of 1939.
He was a Veteran of World
War II, having joined the United States
Army in early 1942, serving in North
Africa and Europe, attaining the rank
of Sergeant. Following his discharge
in December 1945, he went to work in
the Timber industry. Ernie had worked
as a faller and later as a supervisor for
Holce Logging Company in Vernonia
for seventeen years, until he retired in
1986.
Ernie was united in marriage
to Velva Ramsey in 1949. They later
divorced.
On December 18, 1985, he was
united in marriage to Irene Bergerson
on the Christensen homestead in
Vernonia, Oregon. They celebrated
their 25 th Wedding Anniversary this past
December. Following their marriage
they made their home on the Christensen
Homestead in Vernonia, where they have
resided since.
Ernie was an avid outdoorsman.
He loved fishing (especially winter
stealhead), hunting, hiking and camping.
Following his retirement, he enjoyed
traveling and working on his tree farm.
He was preceded in death by
his parents and his three sisters, Arvela
Robertson, Vesta King and Lesta
Peppard.
Survivors include his wife,
Irene Christensen, of the family home
in Vernonia, Oregon; four stepsons
and their spouses, Phillip D. “Phil”
and Debbie Meyer, of Aloha, Oregon;
Stanley B. “Stan” Meyer, of Vernonia,
Oregon; Ronald D. “Ron” and Cindy
Meyer, of Beaverton, Oregon; and
Gary B. and Debra Meyer, of Vernonia,
Oregon.
Also surviving are his three
grandchildren, Justin Meyer, of New
York City, New York; Nicholas Meyer,
Beaverton, Oregon and Michael Meyer,
of Aloha, Oregon; and several nieces
and nephews.
The family suggests that
remembrances may be contributions to
the N.R.A. (National Rife Association),
