Portland Pirate Festival Comes to St. Helens
The annual events marks it’s 6 th Anniversary with a new location, dates and entertainment
and a vigorous push to help bring a tall ship to the Columbia and Willamette Rivers!
Climb aboard as the 6th annual
Portland Pirate Festival sets sail for two
exciting days of piratical fun and family
adventure when they invade the historic
waterfront of St. Helens, OR. The
Festival weekend begins on Saturday,
September 3rd and ends on Sunday,
September 4th and features all of the fun
and excitement it has become famous
for, with the awesome addition of more
access for boaters!
The new location in St. Helens,
OR (Portland’s nearest escape and film
location for the first Twilight movie)
offers a variety of great changes to
this staple NW festival, including: a
beautiful spot on the Columbia River, an
Olde Towne setting and ample moorage
for boats at the city docks and on Sand
Island.
Other fun new events in 2011
will include the addition of Mermaid
Lagoon; wild costume parades lead by
The Last Regiment Drummers and The
Oregon Defense Force Pipe Band; the
comedy of Cap’n Chris the Hypnotist;
Curtis Carlyle Seriously Funny Juggling,
and the whip cracking Lefty Caress.
The Portland Pirate Festival
is proud to be helping bring a Tall
Ship permanently to the waters of the
Columbia and Willamette Rivers. The
beautiful 68’ Square Tops’l Ketch
“Royaliste”
(www.theroyaliste.com)
will be arriving in Portland not long after
the festival, in time for Talk Like a Pirate
Day, and PPF is lending its support
towards helping her make the move
from Kentucky Lake. This wooden
hulled sailing ship will serve as a center
of maritime education and become an
active part of communities and events in
the area for decades to come. This year’s
festival will raffle off a private party on
The Royaliste, as well as other prizes,
and all proceeds will go towards helping
cover the over-land hauling expenses of
this exciting relocation effort. PPF LLC
will assume a major role in organizing
and promoting this unique opportunity
year-round. The Royaliste will be
brought to us by Margot Productions

For the kids this year’s lineup
includes a host of family friendly
entertainment, including the giant
strolling puppets of Seattle’s Zambini
Brothers, Let’s Pretend’s interactive
high energy children’s theater, Dragon
Theater Puppet Shows, PDXYAR’s
Pirates of the Cursed Sea and the
unveiling of their land ship, EL Tiburon,
hands-on swordplay with Academia
Duellatoria, scavenger hunts and
interactive games with The Pirates of
Puget Sound; cannon shows on Thunder
Ridge; giant inflatable rides such as
The Kraken and free balloons and face
painting by beautiful mermaids!
Order of The Leviathan Pirate Lords
from around the country will abound,
including Margot la Mechante,
Quicksilver, The Mackay, Talderoy,
Dave Nichols and new nominees
up for the vote in Pirates Magazine:
Mister Mac and Luc the Lucky.
Captain Slappy, co-creator of
International Talk Like a Pirate Day
will grace the stage along with Emmy
Award winning storyteller Mark
Lewis.
Musical Acts include Pirates
Charles, hailing from Southern
California, combining old-world
instruments with modern sounds to
create music that is bold, adventurous
and strong; Baby Gramps, an
eccentric, seemingly very old singer
and steel guitar player based in
Seattle, with a voice like popeye
after smoking an entire tin of Prince
Albert; Mister Mac (aka Aloysius
MacKnucklepeck), a seasoned and
well-tarred salt who has weathered
many a storm and braved the waters of
many a birthday party, Mr. Mac is just
the man to handle a new young crew;
Man Overboard, masterfully combines
the sounds of shanties, drinking songs,
wake traditionals, patriotic nautical
battle hymns and pirate influences from
the 1600’s to the 1800’s with some great
more recent styles and genres. They
have a lot of original music & material
that just plain rocks, while most of their
material retains that traditional nostalgia
of the old world. There also be some of
the music from local shores, including
Chervona, BilgeRats & Pyrettes, Chata
Addy & Susuma, and St. Helens own
Desert Mirage.
Oberon’s Tavern will feature
Kraken Rum and Ninkasi brews, as well
as pub sings and shanty men.

Vernonia: Through The Artist’s Eye
Sponsored by Vernonia Hands-On Art
Center, a non-profit 501 (c) (3) arts organization,
Vernonia Through the Artist’s Eye participants are:
Diane Coughlin, Walter Neuman, Sally Harrison, and
Dave Anderson. They were each given their choice
of downtown Bridge Street or the railroad station to
interpret, scenes pulled from the book: IMAGES OF
AMERICA: VERNONIA compiled by the volunteers
of the Vernonia Pioneer Museum. Paintings are to
be raffled off with proceeds split between the artists
and Hands-On Art; winning tickets pulled 3:00 PM at
Salmon Fest on October 1 st . Each painting has its own
raffle. Tickets are $1.00 each or 6 for $5.00. Paintings
will be on display at:
First Fridays, and at the Pioneer Museum
which is open Friday through Sunday, 1:00PM to
