Creature Comforts: Caring for Your Best Friends

Phew-kitten season has finally come and
gone at Creatures. We found great homes for over 18
local kittens - which means the puppies are here! We
currently have well bred and healthy pups. Come on by
and check them out!
Drum roll please: Beginning August 8th
Creatures is excited to announce that we’ll be
expanding our services to include Animal Nutrition
Consulting and will be hosting monthly vaccination
clinics for dogs, cats and small animals! We’ve been
fortunate to be able to bring Victoria Guerrero onto
our team. Victoria has an extensive background as a
Veterinarian Technician and has additional training in
Holistic Animal Nutrition and Care from American
Holistic Veterinary Medical Association (AHVMA).
The “holistic” piece to her training includes nutrition
and emotion, as well as overall health. If your animal
exhibits any odd behaviors or habits; chronically
itches; is a finicky eater; is visibly overweight or
underweight; is depressed; or is just plain acting weird
but otherwise healthy, then you might consider making
an appointment for you and your pet to visit with
Victoria here at Creatures. She will complete a health
assessment for your animal and create a path for your
pet to realize better health and happiness. Nutrition
consulting will by appointment any day Monday -
Saturday from 10-4 PM and cost $30 for the first visit
and $15 for each follow up.
As we all know, vaccinations are the best
defense against a variety of diseases that cats and
dogs can be susceptible to. One deadly disease that the
Vernonia Veterinary Clinic reports diagnosing here in
Columbia County is Canine Parvovirus (Parvo). Parvo
is a highly contagious disease of the intestinal tract. It
progresses quickly so death is common. Unvaccinated
dogs and puppies may succumb to this disease in only
4 or 5 days from severe dehydration. Therefore, if your
puppy or mature dog displays any of the following
signs, prompt medical care is needed to save them:
diarrhea, vomiting, and lack of interest in food. The
good news is that Parvo can easily be preventable by
keeping your dog’s vaccinations up to date annually.
Often dogs are given a combination vaccine. To be sure
that Parvo was included in your dog’s vaccination look
for the following PV, Pv, or CPV on your shot records.
Vaccinations can be obtained at your local
Vernonia Veterinary Clinic, Monday, Wednesday or
Saturday; Valley Veterinary clinic on Thursdays and
now at Creatures vaccination clinics once a month with
the first one starting Saturday, August 20th beginning
at 10:00 AM-4:00 PM by appointment only at 503-429-

2011 Oregon International Air Show
Look to the skies beginning
Friday, August 19 through Sunday,
August 21 as the 24th annual Oregon
International Air Show takes flight!
Presented by Standard TV & Appliance,
this year’s action-packed event at the
Hillsboro Airport will feature something
for everyone, including The Patriots
6-Jet Team of high performance L-39s,
the U.S. Army Black Dagger Parachute
Team, F-15, F-16 and F-18 military
demos, an Aerobatic Racing Challenge
and much more.
The gates open Friday night
at 6:00 PM. and the skies come to life
at 7:00 PM. This night will feature the
biggest fireworks and pyrotechnics
display in Oregon, presented by ATG
and Homeland Fireworks. Before
the grand finale, spectators can enjoy
amazing flying and some great ground

entertainment including static displays
and all the KOIN Local 6 Entertainment
Center has to offer. Whether its reserved
seating, food and drink at the Ninkasi
Craft Beer Garden, a visit to the US
Bank KidZone to wear the kids out, or
climbing inside the cockpit of an F-15
in the Military Village , visitors can truly
make the most of their Friday night. As
part of US Bank Community Kids Night,
every paying adult who brings a school
supply donation Friday night will earn
free admission for one child. Additional
kids are only $10 each. Kids can also
meet and take pictures with performers,
and even pick up free autographs and
posters.
The festivities continue at full
throttle Saturday and Comcast Sunday
with a dizzying array of performers and
other offerings. The gates open at 9:00
AM and the overhead action begins at
10:45 AM. The Patriots 6-Jet team
will electrify spectators with fast-
paced, choreographed formation flying,
aerobatic maneuvers and signature
moves. Also dazzling the crowd will be
F/A 18E Super Hornet and F-16 Viper
West Demo Teams, an F-15 Oregon Air
National Guard fly-by, the U.S. Army
Black Dagger Parachute Team and 14
outstanding civilian performances.
An extensive lineup of military
static displays including warbird aircraft
are among the many other sights. The
KOIN Local 6 Entertainment Center
will be packed with more displays
and US Bank KidZone entertainment
features. Add to the fun Military
Village attractions inviting guests to
test their muscle, climb a rock wall and
even get up close and personal with

Dignity Memorial and the
Oregon International Air Show salute the
military through this event by offering
free general admission Saturday and
Comcast Sunday to any man or woman
who has served, or is serving, in the
military. Vets can upgrade to a reserved
seat in advance or at the gates for only
$10. This includes active, retired or
honorably discharged military with
verification.
The Oregon International Air
Show will continue its tradition of
honoring special needs children on
Comcast Sunday for Margaret Teufel
Day. The show will host 800 special
needs children and adults, providing
reserved seats, lunch and the opportunity
to meet the performers up close and
personal. Since 1988, the show has
hosted more than 18,000 special needs
children and adults. “We are proud to
involve and give back to our community
through this event,” says show President
Judy Willey.
Since its inception 24 years ago,
the Oregon International Air Show has
donated more than $1.2 million to 475
organizations. As a non-profit 501(c)
(3) organization, the show donates all
net proceeds to local charities and non-
profits. The event is made possible by
the efforts of more than 1,500 volunteers
each year.
Senior Center Activities
5-Area Luncheon: Monday, August
29th at the St. Helens Senior Center
side parking lot door opens at 7:00. Ah,
sweet treats!
Connie’s Fabulous Breakfasts: Fab-
ulous breakfasts are available to the
public on Fridays for a cost of only
$3.50. The event happens at the Senior
Center (446 Bridge Street) from 7:30
to 9:00 AM each Friday. Meal price in-
cludes a beverage, too. Enter through
the side, parking lot door. What a deal!
Thrift Store: Bargain prices can be
found in Vernonia’s Senior Center in
their Thrift Store. The retail store is
open Monday through Friday, from
9:00 AM until 3:00 PM. The Thrift
Store provides funds for the Senior
Center’s facility and its many activi-
ties. Donations can also be dropped off
during those same hours, and donated
clothes need to be clean and in good
condition so they are “sales ready”.
We are offering half off during the first
week of each month. Buy locally and
support your local Senior Center.

Week Day Lunches: The Vernonia
Senior Center offers nutritious and
tasty lunches each weekday for only
$4. These are available to the public,
not just Senior Citizens. (Mealtime is
noon; late arrivals may not be served.)
You can reserve your lunch by calling
by 11:15 AM, or further in advance
if possible, to assist the cooks as they
prepare the day’s meals.
Maple Bars available locally! Con-
nie King, the cook at the Senior Cen-
ter, is making maple bars each day. The
maple bars are available to the public,
too, and only cost $1 each. Availabil-
ity is subject to quantity on hand. You
can assure yourself of a good supply by
pre-ordering them directly from Con-
nie by calling the Senior Center (503-
429-3912) any week day, from 7:00
AM-3:00 PM. Please allow one day
lead time for larger orders. The Cen-
ter’s front door opens at 9:00, but the
Special Days: On the last Wednesday
of the month Wauna Credit Union will
be serving ice cream. On the last Fri-
day of the month we will serve birth-
day cake and ice cream to celebrate
that month’s birthdays.
Membership Dues: Another way to
support Vernonia’s Senior Center is to
pay the $15 annual membership dues.
Checks may be mailed or dropped off
at the Senior Center. Anyone 50 and
older may join.
