“Right, Mate—Let’s Play Futball!”

er. “I could come over here
and get paid to coach soccer
or work in the supermarket
at home.”
After working with the
kids, Walsh and Drohan held
a two hour Coaches Clinic
on the last day of camp for
adults who want to coach
Vernonia youth.
“We’ll
teach them basic warm ups,
basic drills—footwork, po-
sitional play--so they can
improve the kids,” says
Walsh.
According to Mark Le-
may, who helped arrange for
the Challenger Soccer Camp
to come to Vernonia, the
week was a big success and
received lots of positive feed-
back. Lemay says the camp

will help the Vernonia Soccer Club
get ready for their fall season, but he
wants to try to build on the excitement
the camp has created. Lemay says he
is inviting anyone interested to come
out on Tuesday and Thursday evenings
at 6:00 PM at Hawkins Park for some
casual time to kick the ball around and
maybe organize some small games for
different age groups. Sounds like a
great opportunity to enjoy the weather,
get some exercise, and work on soccer
skills.
And practice your futball slang
and trivia. “Which futballer has scored
the most goals in World Cup history—
Ronaldo, (not Cristiano Ronaldo, but
fat Ronaldo), George Best, Pele, or
Miroslov Klose?” Englishman Best,
one of the greatest players ever, never
played in World Cup and “fat” Ronaldo
was the leader before the 2010 World
Cup. Brazilian Pele scored 12 goals.
The answer is Germany’s Klose with
18.
See you on the pitch this summer!
his first few weeks here. Drohan, from
Winsford, England is a college
student, studying at Cheshire Uni-
versity. He says he loves working
with the young players and would
definitely come to the States and
do it again. “We had some really
good players here in Vernonia--Ian
Torres and Josh Price are really
good for their age,” says Drohan,
“And because the younger players
are playing with them, it’s going to
make them progress.”
This is Walsh’s third year
working in the United States for
Challenger Sports. A twenty-one
year old college student from Tal-
ford, Walsh says he loves working
with the kids in the United States...
“It’s a really good experience, you
get to see the world,” explains
Walsh about working for Challeng- Left-Right: Coach Jack Walsh attempts to discuss the finer points of soccer strategy; Coach Tim Drohan watches players demonstrate
their skills; Coaches Jack and Tim hand out evaluations at the end of camp.
