VHS Forestry Program
Update
The Vernonia High School
Forestry Program is moving for-
ward and is on schedule to begin
classes in the fall of 2011. The
program will be under the direction
of instructor Byron Brown, who
worked in the logging industry
before becoming a teacher several
years ago. According to Brown the
course will be very hands on and
interactive and will provide many
opportunities for the community to
be involved.
“I’ve been given the re-
sponsibility of developing the
curriculum and designing and
teaching the forestry class,” ex-
plains Brown. “I’ve been talking
to Julie Woodward from Oregon
Forest Resource Institute (OFRI)
and Amy Grotta, OSU Extension
Forestry Educator, and the Oregon
Department of Education about
what should be in the curriculum,
and what resources are available.
The Northwest Center for Sustain-
able Resources, OSU College of
Forestry and OFRI have provided
curriculum materials for the class-
room. I’ve also had help from
Jeff Skirvin, forestry instructor at
Knappa High School, and have
visited KHS to see first-hand what
they’re doing.”
Brown says he is working
to develop projects in coordina-
tion with the Upper Nehalem Wa-
tershed Council in the Bear Creek
watershed in Vernonia. Longview
Timber Company has allowed the
school access to the watershed and
has also committed to helping in
any way they can. In addition, the
Forestry Program is planning some
projects in conjunction with Han-
cock Forest Management.
Brown and the new program has re-
ceived a lot of support from Mark
Standley, of Log-Safe, Inc. who is
helping with resources, contacts
and fundraisers. His son, Mark
Standley, Jr. of Bighorn Logging,
has generously donated $5,000 to
the program to help get it started.
Other local logging companies will
also be involved.
Brown says field trips are
being planned to the World Forest-
ry Center and the Tillamook Forest
Center, lumber mills, logging sites,
fish hatcheries and seedling nurs-
eries. Transportation to many of
these will be paid for by OFRI.
“We will have a need for
volunteers from the community,
especially seniors with a back-
ground in the wood products in-
dustry,” says Brown. “I could use
some supervisory help with our
field work. Guest speakers with
specialized or historical knowl-
edge would be a big help. Like all
volunteers they will have to be ap-
proved by the school district.”
Anyone who would like
to volunteer can contact Brown by
e-mail at bbrown@vernonia.k12.

Club Med Health Careers
Program at Vernonia High School
This spring 22 juniors and seniors
from Vernonia High School attended the
Oregon Pacific Area Health Education health
careers program Club Med. These students
met afternoons in April, May and June to
learn about a variety of health careers. Each
meeting provided students with information
about health occupations and also provided
students with hands on activities including
learning to use a stethoscope and blood
pressure monitor.
In June, students were provided with
a field trip to Medical Teams International
exhibit in Tualatin to learn about the work
health care provider volunteers do both in
Oregon and worldwide. Students learned
about health conditions in Africa, Bosnia,
and Mexico. After the field trip, students
completed a service learning project raising
$100 for medications that will be delivered
to a clinic in Oaxaca Mexico. The students
also put together 30 hygiene kits that included
soap, a comb, wash clothes, tooth paste and
tooth brushes. These supplies will go to an
elementary school in Oaxaca.
Club Med will take place again in the
spring of 2012 at Vernonia High School. For
information contact Karen Bondley at 541-
557-6459 or email to kbondley@charter.net.
